What you need to know about hydraulic fittings

Why learning about hydraulic fittings is vital?

It can save your?money!

Every machine user and maintainer will experience a burst or leaking oil line, so have a call for a professional service person to drive to the job site, press a new one on site next to the excavator and put the new one right on, and you'll have a quick fix! This does work! But it's expensive!

If you don't know about hydraulic hose fittings then you don't know which one to choose. So the only option is an expensive on site service!

This article will share with you some knowledge of hose fittings that will hopefully save you some money in the future.

It is well known that threaded joints generally require internal and external threads to be used together.

If two threaded joints are to be screwed together for the purpose of connection, the thread types must match and the sealing surfaces must match.

First of all, let's get to know the BSP connectors, which are basically the standard for all the accessories (various devices) such as breakers. The B in BSP is British, which is the British Standard.

When we say BSP fitting, it defines the threads and sealing surfaces.

Once the BSP thread size has been determined, it defines the thread diameter size, and the thread pitch.

With BSP, the sealing surface is an external taper. The taper angle of the BSP is 60 degrees.

When tightened together, the inner and outer taper surfaces of the BSP come into contact to form a seal.

JIC and ORFS are more common on Caterpillar excavators.

The sealing surface of the JIC is the opposite of the BSP; the JIC has a female taper on the female threaded coupling and a male taper on the male threaded coupling.

When the internal and external threads are screwed together, the two tapered surfaces come into contact to form a seal.

The taper angle of the JIC is 74 degrees, or 37 degrees as some call it.

ORFS has a flat sealing surface, both female and male threads.

At the top of the male thread, there is a groove in which an O-ring is placed.

When the inner and outer threads are screwed together, the O-ring contacts and deforms with the flat surface of the inner thread, forming a seal.

The 3 standard fittings BSP JIC ORFS are easily distinguishable by the shape of the sealing surface.

In addition, the BSP, JIC, ORFS are available in 6 thread sizes from 1/4" to 1" respectively. The Dash are following:

The Metric is commonly found on excavators made in China.

Metric's internal threads have a male tapered sealing surface and an O-ring on the male taper.

There are 13 different thread diameters from 1/4'' to 1", M14,M16,M18,M20,M22,M24,M26,M27,M30,M33, M36,M39,M42.

The metric thread pitch is variable.

Example:

M14-M30, thread pitch generally 1.5 mm.

M30-M42, the thread pitch is normally 2mm

Metric threads: M18*1.5 means that the thread diameter is M18 and the thread pitch is 1.5mm, but the M18 thread pitch can also be 2mm, which is expressed as M18*2

M18*1.5 and M18*2 cannot be joined together.

In addition to the above threads, Komatsu excavator fittings are generally JIS standard. Do you know how to identify JIS fittings?
