What you need to know about Canada: Highlights from Consul General Féquière

This month, we have been working closely with 1871 in Chicago to support a group of Canadian innovators taking part in 1871’s Supply Chain Innovation Lab accelerator program. The partnership provides a unique opportunity for Canadian companies to demonstrate their abilities and accelerate growth.?
?Supply chains, when they work efficiently, are nearly invisible. During COVID, we became very aware of the interconnected nature of global supply chains. Here are some important facts about the Canada-U.S. supply chain ecosystem:?
?Canada-U.S. trade is built on longstanding and cross-border supply chains; roughly 70% of Canadian goods exports to the U.S. are used in the production of other goods.?
?Since 2021, our two governments have worked together via the Canada-U.S. Working Group on Supply Chains to enhance security and resilience in areas including EVs & batteries, critical minerals, public health and transportation.?
?In 2023, our governments began working together to advance a cross-border semiconductor manufacturing corridor. In Canada, this started began with significant investments by the Government of Canada, the Government of Québec and IBM Canada to enhance the production and packaging capabilities for semiconductor modules at the company’s Bromont facility – a combined $187 million investment.?
Along with the auto and agriculture sectors, the Canadian and U.S. energy sectors are highly integrated. The two countries are working together via the Canada-U.S. Energy Transformation Task Force to accelerate cooperation on critical clean energy opportunities and related supply chains.?

The?United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)?underpins North American supply chains and enables the three countries?to compete as a regional bloc; our economies are complementary, and our companies have an edge?because of the rules-based and barrier-free trade that the agreement provides.?
Our integrated supply chains are also underpinned by the continental reach of the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City railways, Canada’s strategic marine ports in Montréal, Prince Rupert and Vancouver, and the jointly-managed Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System.?
These supply chain connections will be further enhanced by Canada’s investment in the new Gordie Howe International Bridge that is being built between Windsor and Detroit.?
