What You Need to Know (AI Model Competition + AI Copyright) by Randi Zuckerberg

Earlier this week, Alexandra Cavoulacos & I had the pleasure to visit the New York Stock Exchange with Speedinvest to talk about AI and art marketplaces, while sharing some of the exciting work we're doing at HUG. From cave paintings to computers, technology has always played a role in how we make and share art. With new technologies, like AI and blockchain, come new opportunities to experiment and explore our ever-changing relationship with creativity.

Now on to what you need to know this week!

• AI Model Competition Heats Up : I don’t know if you all caught all the latest AI models that got released last week - but there were quite a lot even for AI standards! Here are a few- Google’s Gemini 1.5, the large language model, that hopes to be an industry leader, Meta’s new model that learns by watching videos, and of course OpenAI’s out-of-this-world text-to-video creator- Sora. It continues to amaze me how quickly we are seeing these models progress, and even a whole new paradigm shift in how these models are trained. For instance, instead of learning from written words, they can now learn from video. The underlying technology is shifting so fast, that I believe the next generation of disruption will be defined by how quickly we can adapt and learn to work with these models!
• The Latest in AI Copyright: This is by far the most comprehensive article I have read on AI copyright issues, and argues that the NYTimes may well beat OpenAI in its case. At the heart of the issue, The New York Times's goal isn’t to get OpenAI’s ChatGPT to stop outputting copies of New York Times articles. It’s to get AI companies to start paying for training licenses. While GenAI companies continue to argue for fair use, the details in this article outline that it is a lot more complex than at first glance. One thing is for certain, we need to take copyright issues seriously to protect artist’s work and I look forward to seeing how the courts decide this matter!

The future of art is coming at us fast, and I can't wait to see where it takes us next.
