What You Need to Do BEFORE You Plan Any Change
One of the really distinctive features of the Appreciative Inquiry method, apart from focusing on what works rather than on problems, is the emphasis on looking at what's working in the present and what has worked in the past?before?we start constructing a vision of the future.
This holds true at all levels of change, from individual goal-setting to organisational redesign. In Appreciative Inquiry's '5D' cycle, the Discovery stage is where we inquire into what's already working, what's worked in the past, and more fundamentally, what gives life (metaphorically speaking) to the person, team, or organisation - their strengths, motivations, achievements they're proud of, peak experiences...
Looking at what's working and what's worked previously has many advantages over jumping straight into constructing our vision of the desired future.

In the Discovery stage of Appreciative Inquiry we're getting information about success stories we can learn from, what's really important and motivating to people, the conditions that give make success possible, and also their wishes for the future.
What we're also doing as part of that Discovery is identifying the important themes coming out of those stories - the ones that have the most impact for people, and the ones they find most inspiring.
In the next few articles we'll explore how exactly we do all that.

"Having completed Andy's Practical Appreciative Inquiry course I cannot recommend it or him highly enough. It does exactly what it says on the tin, making AI practical and understandable. The course platform is first class and the downloadable materials are a very generous gift from Andy's extensive knowledge and experience in this area." - Brian Fairchild, Executive and Careers Coaching

1 年I'm a firm believer in the Appreciative way of doing things. So much better than "throwing the baby out with the bathwater". I think my favourite part is how integrating the best of the old into our plans for the new eases us into change. Much easier to maintain enthusiasm this way!
