What You Must Know If You're Considering Going Back to School for Your DNP

Embarking on the journey to pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a decision that warrants thoughtful consideration, strategic planning, and an unyielding dose of resilience or as Jose Arnold Tariga, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE, NPD-BC, NE-BC, CPHQ would say #grit. As someone who's currently navigating the turbulent waters of a DNP program, I want to share a candid glimpse into the life of a DNP student and offer some insights that might guide you in making this pivotal decision. Here’s what you must know if you’re considering going back to school for your DNP.

The Reality of DNP Programs: It's a Marathon, Not a Sprint

First and foremost, understand that a DNP program is not just another academic commitment—it's a marathon. With my program consisting of 11 courses, the breadth and depth of knowledge to be mastered can seem daunting. Here I am, in my fourth class, already facing the kind of challenges that test every fiber of my resolve. The program is roughly 24-25 months long.

The Rollercoaster of Emotions

Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions. There have been moments, more than I can count on both hands, where the thought of quitting seemed like the most viable option ( Program Changes, Issues with Requirements). The pressures of research, academic writing, and maintaining a semblance of balance can be overwhelming. Yet, with each small victory, like getting chapter one of my dissertation approved, there's a reminder of why this journey is worth it.

Time Management is Non-Negotiable

Mastering the art of time management is not just advisable; it's essential. Balancing coursework, research, and personal life requires a level of discipline and organization that cannot be understated. For my program, I need 1,000 hours of clinical. That's roughly 15 hours a week on top of everyday life. Learn to prioritize tasks and set realistic goals to keep yourself on track without burning out.

Seek Support and Stay Connected

The importance of a robust support system cannot be overstated( I joined DNPs of Color ). Connect with peers, mentors, and professionals who understand the journey you're on. Their advice, encouragement, and empathy can be the lifeline you need during challenging times.

Embrace the Journey

While the road to earning your DNP may be fraught with challenges, it's also filled with moments of profound growth (GRAY HAIR) and achievement. Embrace each step of the journey, celebrate your milestones, and remember why you embarked on this path in the first place.

It's More Than Just Academics

Pursuing a DNP is as much about personal growth as it is about academic achievement. You'll develop resilience, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the complexities within our healthcare system. These skills will not only enhance your career but also empower you to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Final Thoughts

As I continue to navigate my DNP program, the mantra "DNP or Bust!" echoes with every challenge and triumph. If you're considering this path, know that it's demanding but immensely rewarding. The journey to your DNP will test your limits, but it will also prepare you for a future where you can be a leader in transforming healthcare.

To my fellow students and those contemplating this journey, remember that every great achievement was once deemed impossible. Let's keep pushing forward, one page, one chapter, one coffee(send 星巴克 ) at a time.

Remember, the decision to pursue a DNP is not just an academic one; it's a life choice. Equip yourself with the right information, set your sights on your goals, and never lose sight of the impact you wish to make in the healthcare world. Onward and upward!

Great post Demetrius Kirk, DNPc, MBA,MSN, RN, LNHA, LSSGB, PAC-NE, QCP! Many leadership positions require a PhD or DNP at this point, which is unsettling. I do wish I researched more scholarships and grants.

Doctoral programs, in general, are exactly as you stated "...warrants thoughtful consideration, strategic planning, and an unyielding dose of resilience...". Moving one stone at a time to build that mountain is what is important. Never loose track of the goal. ICAcares.com
