What will you Leave?
Recently, I had a very close friend and mentor die of cancer. It made me think of everything that he taught me (and I hope that I taught him a thing or two as well). He wasn't a typical "leader"; he wasn't a good follower either. He was a man full of flaws but at the same time, he always lent a hand to help anyone, was the first at the firehouse, and took care of things the way only he knew how to.
When I was younger, I really didn't value the knowledge of life that he held, his particular brand of right/wrong, loyalty and courage. Now I am not sure how I would have made it through this world without the knowledge that he so willingly shared with me. He left me those valuable lessons that are only uniquely valuable from him to me.
He left me with a lot of good memories, skills that if I had to, I could probably still use and his hope that I would accomplish my dreams. He didn't see a young kid without a future when he looked at me, he saw potential. He left me to realize that our potential is always there; we just need to grab it and go for the ride. Our potential is what we make of it. That is what he left me. Now the question is; what will I leave?
