What if you "forget where you come from"?
Have you ever felt guilty about letting go of a friendship?
I did. You shouldn’t. Because maintaining friendships for the sake of it holds you and your friends back.
We’re taught a different story though. You shouldn’t change friends.
If you do, you’re not loyal. You’re not trustworthy. You’re unreliable.
But growth is hard when you never change your environment.
Surrounded by people who remember your past. People who don’t want you to change. Because your old self benefitted them.
What if you “forget where you come from?”
Because you change. Your future changes. Your behavior changes.
But old friends don’t always change with you.
That’s what exchanges taught me.
New city. New people. New culture. Adjusted to your growth.
You stay in touch with those who matter and lose contact with those who don’t.
You sacrifice old friendships for new ones. Like you sacrifice the old version of you for a new one.
But is it selfish?
To let go of old friends. To “forget where you come from”.
Maybe maintaining relationships is selfish?
To waste their energy on someone who isn’t present.
To take up their time when they could meet someone new.
What if you accepted friendships come and go?
To smile at the memories you’ve shared.
To smile at the mistakes you’ve made together.
To smile at the acceptance of separating your futures.
How can you approach your friendships differently today?

1 个月Life is nothing but a personal journey. A road travelled filled with experiences. A road that you'll eventually reach the end of. What you do along the way defines your journey. Friends are like suitcases, some of them you take along for the whole journey, some just last you a while. But they all contribute to the road traveled. Along that road you might find a new suitcase to try out, sometimes you might leave them be thanks to previous suitcases that taught you what suitcases suit your journey best. And sometimes you take risks, try out a new kind of suitcase. It's those that might surprise you, and last you longer than you thought. The more you experience along your journey, the broader your world. Some people walk a lifetime looking for the next best experience, while others prefer to walk the same road over and over again. Both journeys are their own, worthwhile and unique to them. Safe travels on yours ??
