What You Don't See
When you go to the grocery shops to do your grocery shopping and the lady in front of you has her card decline a few times. Do you get annoyed or pull out your wallet to help pay for her groceries?
When you go clothes shopping and you see a family with 5 kids around struggling, do you think that they should exercise more birth control or do you want to help her pick up the bottle that her youngest has just dropped which she didn’t see?
The way we perceive poverty is divided. Homelessness does not always just affect people on the street. Sometimes we see it every day and not realise it.
Did you know the lady who could not pay for her groceries was expecting her disability allowance to have gone into her bank account that morning? This would have allowed her to buy the items she needed to sustain her life with her food allergies and Type 1 diabetes in a community housing area?
Did you know that the family with 5 kids were foster parents who had taken on 5 kids who had no home because they wanted to give them something they had never experienced before like a sense of family and love?
If you had known this information, would you have made a different choice or felt different emotions?
Homelessness and poverty are the back story of people who have no voice. They are not always the obvious person you see at a shelter or on the street. They can be people you bump into everyday hoping to make ends meet, trying to help others when they need help themselves.
