This is What You do if Your Company Blocks ChatGPT

Navigating Company Restrictions on ChatGPT Access

Hey everyone, Ritz here! Today, we’re tackling a pressing issue: what to do when your workplace restricts access to ChatGPT. Let’s face it, who wants to revert to the old ways of gathering information? You know, those times when you had to rely on coworkers or, worse, traditional search engines?

The Challenge of AI Restrictions

Picture this: you’re at your desk, in need of quick information, and you attempt to access ChatGPT, only to discover that your company has decided to impose restrictions. While their intentions may be to mitigate security risks, this approach can hinder innovation and limit access to cutting-edge AI tools. It’s akin to locking the candy store and insisting everyone munch on celery sticks instead.

In your mind, you probably saying “For F#@k sakes! Get with this times!”

And let’s not overlook the European Union’s regulations, which can be quite overwhelming. While they aim to shield us from potential AI dangers, they often inadvertently slow down progress. It’s like trying to drive with the emergency brake engaged—good luck making any headway!

Exploring Local AI Models

But don’t worry! There’s a workaround. You can utilize open-source models that operate locally on your computer. Yes, you heard that right! No more waiting for IT to grant you access. You can take control with tools like Ollama or LM Studio.

Now, you might be thinking, “But Ritz, I’m not a tech expert!” No need to fret. Ollama is user-friendly, even if you have to navigate the terminal a bit. It’s like learning to ride a bike—awkward at first, but you’ll be cruising in no time. Plus, there’s a variety of models available, such as Microsoft’s Phi-3, Qwen 2, or Meta’s Llama 3.1 8B parameter model.

This is the way!

Understanding the Limitations

Let’s discuss some limitations. While these local models may not match the capabilities of GPT-4o or its smaller counterparts, they can still perform essential tasks. Think summarizing documents, generating ideas, or drafting emails—tasks that can prevent your workday from becoming a tedious grind.

If you’re interested in testing local models, LM Studio is a great resource. It helps determine if the model can run on your PC, so you won’t be left guessing about your hardware’s capabilities. Speaking of which, for optimal performance, aim for a PC with at least 16GB of RAM.

If you’re working with an 8GB RAM machine, you can still run 3B parameter models, but don’t expect them to win any intelligence contests. If you’re considering a new PC, I’d suggest one with an Nvidia GPU and at least 12GB of video RAM. Yes, it might be a bit of an investment, but think of it as a step towards enhancing your productivity.

You can also explore quantized models for better performance, but we won’t delve into that here.

The Mac Advantage

As a Mac enthusiast, I can attest that with the new Apple Silicon, you benefit from unified memory shared between the CPU and GPU. If I were to purchase a new Mac, I’d opt for 32GB or more. It’s like having a versatile tool ready for any task.

For Windows users, don’t feel left out! You can still access options like GPT4ALL and Ollama UI. Some applications even offer plugins that allow the AI to browse the internet, keeping your AI updated with the latest information. It’s like having a personal assistant who’s always in the loop.

Then you can use ChatleMur. Better, faster and made in France (EU). Justsaying.
