What is it that you do, exactly?
Mike Rizzo
When it comes to Community and Marketing Ops, I'm your huckleberry. Community-Led Founder of MarketingOps.com and MO Pros? - the community for Marketing Operations Professionals
I'm living this split professional thing - and a few days ago when I posted about my desire to find some new opportunities (given the end of my most recent FT role) I was really torn between the two types of professional backgrounds that I have.
I felt the desire to try and pick one path.
I think LinkedIn sort of forces that kind of thinking too. The silos it can create in your field/industry/function are pretty real.
At the end of the day, I decided to share that I'm both a passionate Community-building Professional and a Marketing Ops Professional.
When I got these questions: "What is it that you do... exactly?" or "What do you want to do?"... or "Can you share a bit about yourself so I can pass it along to my network?"... I did the best I could (it ain't great, but it's something) and created a few slides and a blurb about me:
I have over a decade of experience that blends my technical proficiencies in marketing ops, growth marketing, community-building, advisory board building, and SaaS app building - I can offer a range of value to teams. My passion lies in guiding companies toward understanding and adopting a community-led approach to elevate their brand and customer engagement. I’m looking to join as a fractional team member to help with either a) community-led motions, strategy, etc or b) MarketingOps/RevOps (HubSpot <> Salesforce etc) type of opportunities.
Last week I got so much support. I seriously can't thank you all enough for the thoughtful outreach via text, Zoom, Slack DMs, LinkedIn DMs, and phone calls.
I'm feeling very lucky to have all of you in my life and I want to continue to express my gratitude - if there is ANYTHING I can do to support you, please let me know.
If you're wondering what it is that I do - it's much easier to just have a chat with me - but MAYBE this is helpful?! I don't know.

1 年I’m also a serial entrepreneur, I own 5-7 businesses at any time. Most of them are on autopilot and require very little of my time. But I have found that this actually worked AGAINST me in most job interviews in the past. I know for a fact that several companies have past on me just as a result of this (they told me). So, I also feel that I have to hide or shadow my business ownership experience, which I personally feel quite valuable. I’d rather not spend most of the interview having to explain it to an HR Person who has no idea what it means to run a biz. This concept of having to “pick” from my 2 industries and/or only showcase items that are directly related to my current “real day job career” is silly. But it is what it is.

1 年Love this Mike. So many of us wear multiple hats but hide behind the job title. Some get to run multiple roles formally, most have to fit one around another. This is making me think, a lot. Thanks ????

1 年I agree. It can be tough and there’s a myth that we have to pick a single path and stick with it.
