What are you celebrating from 2022?

What are you celebrating from 2022?

Celebrations are a pillar of the Renegade Success Network.

Yet, they are likely a little different than most peoples celebrations. Renegades celebrate their actions, not their results. (We do acknowledge the results have value and yet we don't completely control results.)

So often, I see people only focused on celebrating their results.

  • A big sale
  • A new job
  • A promotion

These all have value and are worth being excited about and yet in each someone else had to do something to achieve it. You weren't in complete control.

I look back on 2022 and am celebrating the actions that I took.

  • I submitted a response to an RFP for a project bigger than I had ever done.
  • I went back and played in my high school alumni basketball game at age 55 and nearly everyone else was in their 20's.
  • I taught my first classes for the Institute of Organizational Management
  • I committed to my first social media ads
  • I created a TikTok account and made a few videos

If I were only to celebrate the results I might not have considered any of these as celebrations:

  • I didn't win the bid
  • I didn't score a point
  • In one of the classes the reviews were just ok
  • I did not get a client from the ad
  • None of my videos went viral (at least yet!)

None of those things I controlled and yet that was not the goal. For each, I stepped a little out of my element and comfort zone and took an action. Those are the things I can control and I am celebrating them on the next to last day of 2022.

For each, I took the time to try and learn from each action with my three favorite questions:

  1. What went well?
  2. What did not go as planned?
  3. What might I do differently?

My real celebration is what I learned from those questions and the actions I took. I celebrate that the knowledge, experience, and perspective I gain will help me as I move into 2023 and consider future actions.

What are you celebrating from 2022?

Are you stuck focused on your results? I find that gets my stuck in celebration or judgement, neither helps me learn. Especially, if 2022 did not go as planned. It can be hard to celebrate anything if that is your mindset.

This time of year should be for celebrating what you did.

I bet if you look back at the things you did, you also had to step out of your comfort zone and do things that were not easy or that you had ever done before. Typically when we do those things the results are not often what we expect. So, rather than celebrate you get frustrated, stuck, and not likely to want to move forward.

Can you change what you celebrate?
