.......................................................
A couple of years ago I was drawn into a TV series that blew my mind and really made me think.
As a huge fan of nature and adventure, I tuned into the Prime show, The World’s Toughest Race.
In it, 66 teams of four from around the world tackle a multi-day, extreme expedition across Fiji.
Participants race non-stop across hundreds of miles of grueling, remote terrain.
They traverse punishing mountains, jungles and oceans, and they paddle, bike, raft, rappel, climb, hike and canyoneer in a bid to reach the finish line before time runs out.
And all on little or no sleep over six to eleven days!
Now, aside from the beauty of the landscape and the thrill of the extraordinary quest, one thing astonished me.
I expected the people engaged in this unthinkable race to be ultra-trained athletes in their prime; those at the peak of their physical fitness and mental health.
And many were.
But here’s what I found mesmerising and astounding...
Several weren't!!
Among them were:
Two ordinary daughters who wanted to share the experience with their endurance racer dad.
A former athlete who’d spent the last two years having two children.
A 40-year-old mum and ironman triathlete who'd recently suffered a full mental breakdown, and who had a history of panic attacks.
A 57-year-old endurance racer with young-onset Alzheimer's disease.
And a team of veterans with combat disabilities, wounds and internal struggles.
As I watched these people achieve the most insane feats in spite of their personal and physical issues and challenges, one thing became abundantly clear.
We are capable of so much more than we think we are!
And it reminded me of the 10x rule.
If you haven't heard of it, this approach involves:
- Setting targets for yourself that are 10x greater than what you believe you can achieve.
- Taking actions that are 10x greater than the norm to achieve your goals.
- Deliberately challenging yourself to get 10x the value from any monetary investment you make in your own learning and personal development.
The whole point is to help you go further than you ever thought possible.
Now if this all feels heavy and like too much of a push, I hear you.
Resistance is the primary response from almost everyone who considers supersizing their ambitions and efforts, including me.
So I’m approaching this with a bite-size step and just choosing one thing to begin with.
I challenge you to do the same.
Consider one goal you have or one investment you’ve made. Write it down and then take some time to reflect on how you might 10x it.
Then to make that 10x version a reality, think about the small steps could you take to move towards it, making a list.
Then choose the easiest step and action it.
When that's complete, do the next, and then the next, and see what happens.
You might just find that you are more capable than you think you are!
If you’re wondering what my version of this looks like, I’ve just signed up for a mastermind course so I’m going to approach it with the goal of getting 10x more value from it than the hefty cost incurred.
That means I’m committing to show up to all the live calls, despite them being in the evening.
I’m going to actively participate and challenge myself to ask questions (I’m naturally a lurker!)
I’m going to complete all the homework on time, no excuses.
And I’m going to share the learnings with a coach friend, who will keep me accountable and ensure I weave the best of it into my work.
So let’s do this.
If a 57-year-old man with Alzheimer's and a bad back can paddle 40 miles of ocean, navigate 62 miles of jungle and scramble across a rocky, freezing cold river, there is nothing we can’t do!!
