What You Can Know from Soldermask Color?

First of all, the PCB as a printed circuit board, mainly to provide electronic components between the mutual connection. Color is not directly related to performance, and differences in pigments do not affect electrical properties either. The performance of the PCB board is determined by factors such as the material used (high Q value), wiring design and several layers of board. However, in the process of washing the PCB, black is the easiest to cause chromatic aberration, if the raw materials and production process has slightly deviation, high defective rate will occur due to color difference which raises up production cost considerably.

In fact, PCB raw materials are everywhere in our daily life, that is, fiberglass and resin. Glass fiber sin combined with resin, hardened, into a heat insulated & bend resistant board called PCB substrate. Of course, the PCB substrate made of glass fiber and resin alone cannot conduct the signal, so on the PCB substrate, the manufacturer will cover the surface with a layer of copper, so the PCB substrate can also be called a copper-coated substrate.


Because the circuit layout in black PCB is difficult to recognize, which makes the debugging and maintenance job much more tricky, so generally if there isn’t strong R&D team and experienced maintenance staffs in place, black soldermask will not be considered. From another perspective, the use of black PCB is demonstration of company’s confidence in their R&D capability and overall corporate strength.
