Do you ever stop to think about the things you believe? We all have a belief structure, whether we think about it or not. And for the most part, our beliefs are all over the place! We are all convinced of our “truths’ regardless of any objective truth. Our beliefs fit in that category.
I have always guided my mentees in an exercise on understanding your beliefs. It appears in Sustained Leadership WBS on page 125, if you already have a copy. In simplest terms, you write down a belief that you hold. It might reflect your kindness or it might be greedy. It might reflect entitlement; it might reflect religious or political values. After making a list of about 5 to ten of these beliefs, you then address the hard part.
Write a paragraph – just 2 or three sentences – asking yourself, “Why do I believe this?” If you cannot state your beliefs clearly and articulate why you hold them, perhaps you are not as convinced as you thought! In Sustained Leadership WBS development, we do this exercise periodically. It’s a healthy one to revisit regularly.?
So that’s your action item today. Write down a few beliefs and challenge yourself on your reasons. It builds character!?

P.S. – When you enroll in the program you will have access to a full workshop on exploring your beliefs and understanding why you believe them. That alone is worth the cost of the entire program. For now, simply take the time to think about your beliefs. Once you have those well entrenched in your brain, so much of being a leader becomes easier. You make decisions faster, you make better decisions, and you can more clearly express your vision for the team you lead. I’m just giving away gems here!?
