What writing style should I use for my book?

Day 8 of 30 Bestselling Book Tips for Writing Your Life Story

Writing a memoir is a deeply personal journey, one that requires not only courage but also a keen understanding of how to effectively convey your story. For many writers, especially those tackling challenging topics, the question of what writing style to employ can be daunting. Should it be lyrical and poetic, or straightforward and factual?? In the realm of memoir writing, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Instead, the key lies in finding a style that authentically reflects your voice and resonates with your readers.

There are many elements you can incorporate into your memoir writing. Personal anecdotes provide intimate glimpses into your life. Musings on your journey add depth, allowing readers to glimpse the inner workings of your mind and heart. References to literature or research can lend credibility and context to your story, anchoring it in a broader cultural or historical landscape. Scenes and dialogue bring your experiences to life, inviting readers to immerse themselves in the moments that shaped you. And if your book serves a self-reflective or instructive purpose, don't hesitate to intersperse it with self-help suggestions or insights gleaned from your own growth.

My best advice when it comes to discovering the writing style that works best for you is two-fold: read a lot and write a lot.? Discovery comes from absorbing the work of our favorite authors and experimenting with our creativity.?? Once you start looking at books from the lens of a writer instead of a reader, everything will shift.? Once you let go of your writing inhibitions, you will find new ways to express yourself.

There is no perfect book - and perfectionism will only inhibit your writing process.? Instead, embrace the imperfections, the messy truths, and the raw beauty of your story. It's in these imperfections that the true essence of memoir writing lies—the unfiltered, unapologetic expression of your authentic self. So, let go of the need for perfection, and allow your story to unfold in all its imperfect glory. After all, it's the imperfections that make it uniquely yours.
