Do you struggle with writing marketing content? Do your words read so flat that you wonder why a customer would want to take the time to read your information? As marketers, we write content for product launches, event marketing, social media engagement, and many other content areas.
There are days where my words are flowing and the message I am creating comes through loud and clear. There are other days when I struggle to form a simple sentence and stay focused on delivering an idea. Have you experienced these scenarios? Implementing a writing strategy will help you visualize your writing process, allow you to write with purpose, and increase your content quality to reach current and potential clients to grow your business.
When using a writing strategy, it all starts with a question- what is the point you are trying to make? Brainstorming, visualizing and outlining what message you want to share helps you develop content with clarity. Jotting down thoughts and creating a visual map helps outline your ideas.
By seeing your ideas written out, you can map together your content and write more clearly. Through this process, you will see your main idea form. Starting with the question "What is the point I am trying to make" helps me connect the dots to develop my main idea and answer through my content development.
As your ideas for content start to develop, the next question I need to ask is, "What is my purpose for writing content?" Defining your purpose will help you build content that is informative, useful and insightful for your audience. Whether your focus is to start a discussion, argue for change, or provide a summary, it is vital to understand your writing purpose.
Recognizing your audience will play a role in writing with purpose as well. Without a clear understanding of your audience, you will struggle to develop clear content and your audience will struggle to understand the point you are trying to make. Are you sharing a new solution with customers? Are you trying to reach new potential clients? Are you trying to develop followers on social media?
Understanding your audience will help you establish the purpose of your messaging and write with more clarity. My purpose for writing this message is to share insights from my content writing experience as a marketer. I want to state my purpose clearly, so my audience understands why I am writing the message.
As our content begins to take shape, we want to increase our content's quality by using a writing strategy. We have brainstormed and developed the main idea. We have confirmed the purpose of our content writing and targeted our audience. However, we haven’t discussed how to build quality content with supporting facts.
Our message needs sufficient details to support the statement we are making. The main subject might be general ideas around your topic, such as a product launch or customer engagement. Now, we need to provide specifics. Specifics are how to develop quality content. By delivering supporting facts, we engage our audience and start to influence their interaction with our content.
Implementing the steps above, I have found that I can improve my content quality giving my audience the information they need. Suppose I am writing to engage marketing content writers. In that case, I might share the following statement: “Writing marketing content can be a struggle but following a writing strategy will help make the process easier.
By using a writing strategy, marketers will have an easier time developing quality content for their audience. Focusing on the point, brainstorming and creating a main idea with the audience in mind, and providing supporting evidence through the message will help marketers create quality content. Marketers need to utilize a writing strategy to deliver quality content to engage with current and potential clients to grow their business.

4 年Crystal, you’re absolutely right, “it all starts with a question- what is the point you are trying to make?” There needs to be one main point with supporting facts for the most impact.
