What Would You Tell The Younger Version Of Yourself?

I read about a research group that studied residents of an elder care home. For several months they interviewed residents and asked a wide range of questions. A good portion of these questions revolved around risk taking and what advice they would give their younger selves. The advice portion was fascinating to me.

The first piece of advice was no matter what, life isn’t fair. I taught my children the only definitions of fair had to do with State and County. Life is not now and never will be fair. Hard stop! Every one of us will have our heart broken, ending up being betrayed by someone we trusted and have more than our share of misery. For long term happiness and success, don’t dwell on these things and just decide to move past them.

To a person they would tell their younger version to develop a stronger work ethic than anyone around them and to produce more than they consume. This means taking the time to continually learn about many topics so when the time comes you have the honor of being a valuable resource to someone else when needed.

Their last and most interesting advice was to do a lot of work on themselves. They would tell their younger self to develop a set of personal standards and lines in the sand they wouldn’t cross. It’s important to know who you are and have others know as well. No matter what you do, give it your best effort. If you sell something promise to never sell anything that doesn’t benefit the other party. Make certain all dealings, both business and personal, are win-win and always avoid winning at someone else’s expense. What advice would you give?
