Hi everyone,
October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it’s a time for us to come together, share our stories, and support those who feel like they’re walking alone through the darkest valleys of their lives. Through my What Would Michele Do prompt, I’ve had the honor of receiving some deeply personal questions from people navigating incredibly tough situations.?
Their bravery inspires me, and today, I want to anonymously share some of their stories and my responses, in the hope that they can inspire you too.
Finding Strength in the Darkness
One woman, a single mother of five, reached out. Her story was heartbreaking—years of emotional, financial, and physical abuse had left her feeling utterly alone. She’s battling not only for custody of her children but also for her own safety, trapped in what feels like a never-ending court battle with a man who has hurt her deeply.
She asked me, “How do people hold on when it feels like there’s no hope left?”
My response? You hold on by putting one foot in front of the other, even when it feels impossible. You don’t have to do it alone—lean on whatever spiritual foundation you have, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s okay to not be okay, and you’d be amazed at how your tribe will show up if you simply let them in. Most importantly, never stop believing in the light at the end of the tunnel, because it’s there, even when it seems far away.
In moments like these, it’s essential to remember: You are beautiful, inside and out. Sharing your story can empower you, and it can empower others who feel trapped in the same cycle. Speak up. You deserve to be heard.
Facing Injustice and Standing Tall
Another story came from someone who was wrongfully arrested after being attacked by their landlord. Despite the evidence and even a statement from the county head confirming the injustice, they found themselves battling a system that seemed intent on ignoring the truth.
My advice was practical: File complaints with internal affairs. There are laws that allow you to hold law enforcement accountable for civil rights violations. But more than that, don’t give up. It’s easy to feel powerless, but knowing your rights and standing up for yourself, even when it feels like the odds are stacked against you, is the most powerful thing you can do.

When Harassment Won’t Stop
Another person asked how to protect themselves from ongoing harassment by a former friend and partner. The emotional toll of being constantly undermined, slandered, and threatened is real.?
For them, the answer was clear: Go to law enforcement, file reports, and seek protective orders. You have the right to feel safe, and you deserve to live without fear. Don’t wait for things to escalate. Taking action now can save you from further harm.
Pursuing Your Passion Despite the Odds
Finally, a proud single mother of four children shared her dilemma about whether or not to pursue a law degree later in life. She was questioning if it was too late, or if she should take the leap.
To her, and to anyone questioning whether to follow their passion, my message is simple: It’s never too late to pursue what makes you feel alive. Follow your passion, whatever it may be, and don’t let anyone—especially your own self-doubt—stop you. Your kids are watching, and there’s no greater lesson you can teach them than showing them what perseverance looks like.
This month, let’s commit to being there for each other. Whether you’re enduring your own battle or supporting someone else through theirs, remember that there is always light, even when it feels dim.
Stay strong, stay brave, and never apologize for who you are. Your journey matters, and you’re not alone.
With love and strength,?
