What would make your life easier at work?

A few weeks ago I was having lunch with a fellow lawyer and we were discussing the importance of certain pain points that we encounter in the legal profession.

It got me wondering: “What would make your life easier at work? Are law firms implementing effective solutions that benefit your team?”

As a lawyer, you know that the key to success is in finding solutions to specific problems. Over the years, I have put a lot of time and effort in providing the solutions listed at 1-4 below at Altermans Solicitors.

We asked the question: “What would make your life easier at work?”And we offered 4 answers, below.

1. Confidence to refer clients

2. Experienced lawyers to talk to

3. Easy to use software/tech /IT

4. More back office/admin support

The results that came back indicated that back office support is of fundamental importance. I have to say that I couldn’t agree more!

Next on the list of results was having experienced lawyers to talk to.

These are areas that we as a firm have prioritised. Our back office is resilient and efficient so we can provide a highly professional service to our clients and a lot of support to our lawyers. We also have plenty of solicitors who have more than 30 years’ experience of practice, giving us hundreds of years’ experience between us.

Why have a great support team in place?

We are passionate about the importance of having a well-oiled and well run machine. Our back office support team have been instrumental in making this happen, which allows our solicitors to focus on what they do best, providing legal services to clients.

We have a tight knit team here and it's important for all staff to work together, towards a common goal of increasing profitability and ensuring the firm's success. While solicitors and fee earners generate the income for the firm, support staff provides the infrastructure and support necessary to enable them to do so. Support staff play a vital role in the success of any firm.

I think it’s also overlooked just how much of a crucial role support staff play in maintaining client relationships. Clients often interact with support staff, and as a result, support staff are also in a position to provide a positive experience for clients, helping to ensure that clients feel valued and that their needs are being taken care of. This leads to higher levels of client satisfaction and retention, which is ultimately beneficial for the long-term success of the firm.

They are often the unsung heroes of the organisation!

The importance of having experienced people around.

You can’t underestimate having experience around you either. Having been qualified for more than 30 years and having run the firm for more than 20 years, I have a wealth of expertise and experience to draw on. I regularly help my peers with their career development, and I am always happy to share what I know with others.

It is a two-way street. Everyone needs people to talk to at some time and I am very fortunate that we have such a highly experienced team here that can help each other and consult on their difficult cases and issues. If I need to talk to someone, I know there are plenty of experienced people to talk to, even if I just want to bounce ideas around.
