What would Jesus say......about what comes from social media in our culture?

But be Aware! And I know you are......

I know this may be contrary by it's very nature since I'm posting this on social media but first let me congratulate the governor of Louisiana for standing up for moral values by adding the Ten Commandments back into the class room and other public spaces. This nation was started on these principles and regardless of your faith preferences , how can you argue with the "Right Things to do"?

Now having said that, I recently had to confront my own grandson about his use of social media and it's real Negative impacts it was having on him. After trying to reach his attention, away from his phone (he's 11 really??), I asked what is so compelling that he ignores me and everything else.

We had a discussion about this and his primary compulsion was " I don't want to miss anything! Well, I'm floored, he is relying on this for his daily info. Yes , I know, I use this constantly for ad's and training info, but really I'd rather enjoy wine or bourbon with friends than have that damn phone in my face.(ok, I'm old)

But the misdirection we are placing our next generation and some of the current generation on the phone/computer use with social media is getting frightening. So I hope I'm a good Christian, and think about it......, if every time you posted a text or comment in any media, and asked the question "What would Jesus think"? If that was the first barometer we used to measure those type of posted comments, how much more different would our attention and reactions to those comments/posts be?

Let me also leave you with some the negative impacts social media is having on our young population. at home and maybe adults too, like:

  • Increased irritability.
  • Increased anxiety.
  • Increased depression.
  • Increased sleep issues.
  • Lack of self-esteem.
  • Lack of focus and concentration. And the biggie is a real increase of depression and suicide among those between 14-17 yrs old. Something to think about!
