You have a challenge to solve. You've been thinking about how you might solve it for a?while. And then suddenly. The eureka moment! The idea presents itself. It's a really good idea. You've been up half the night thinking how good this idea is. You get to work the next day. You tell your pals. They too think it's a good idea. You start to enact it. And then... someone decides it's not a good idea. They have their reasons. They share them. You might decide to go into battle or you might, on?reflection, decide it's not worth it. The effort to outcome ratio is just too high. You give in. Let your idea go. But you still have the challenge to solve and you just can't come up with anything new.?
How do you stimulate some new thinking when it seems all ideas have been exhausted?
On QUBE.. this is what we do.. we use our MagicBoxOfTricks.
First capture what you are trying to achieve. What are the required outcomes?
Then think about what someone else might do. This might be an entirely different organisation. What would the army do? The police? A supermarket? Or what might a different type?of person do? Florence Nightingale? Einstein? Madonna? Use their mind set to create new thinking. Thinking from an entirely different perspective can stimulate lots of new ideas. Then just translate those ideas into something you could practically do and you'll be surprised?what you come up with.

I was stuck with today's #PET of the week topic. So I thought... What would Eddie do? Eddie would use the problem itself to create the solution. (if you're confused it's Quentin writing todays post not Eddie... ) hence MagicBoxOfTricks as #PET of the week.
Try it. Not only will you get some new thinking... but you'll have some fun too.
And tell us what new ideas you come up with.

2 年Some PETs speak more strongly to particular people. We used this PET last week for the launch of Tam Watchorn's Change Ninja Handbook https://www.amazon.co.uk/Change-Ninja-Handbook-interactive-adventure/dp/1788603702 and I love it. Really helps you look at an issue from perspectives that you would otherwise have overlooked completely 10/10!

2 年Great Idea. I've even got a T-Shirt that asks "What Would Jed (Bartlett, of the West Wing) Do?" I wear it for special occasions. Maybe you could rustle up a limited edition "What Would Eddie Do?" T-Shirt. I'm an XXL.

2 年Hi Stellar Eddie and fab team - love to share some thoughts on nurturing 'Impossible Thinking' - as called by another star - 'Spencer Brown thinking' - as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G._Spencer-Brown As more and more - perhaps especially big ESG/UN SDGoal type problems - are going to need some extraordinary thinking - I'm wondering if we shouldn't quite rigorously research and nurture the art and science of 'Impossible Thinking'. And do you recall the lovely quote - “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m possible” Audrey Hepburn Hugs (if acceptable) Mark the Dino wishing to become a Dolphin
