What Is The Worst Betrayal?

Dante Alighieri in "The Divine Comedy" places the traitors in the last circle of hell since he considers betrayal the worst sin of all. The reason is that, unlike other types of crimes, to betray you must first earn the trust and affection of the victim.

The betrayal began with creation: Adam and Eve betrayed God, Cain betrayed Abel, Joseph was betrayed by his brothers, Delilah betrayed Samson, David betrayed Urias The Hittite, David was betrayed by his son Absalom, and Judas betrayed Jesus. These betrayals stand out in the Bible among many others, and let's not forget that Satan was an angel who betrayed God.

The history of the world is also full of betrayals and among them we can highlight: Ephialtes of Trachis who betrayed his homeland and the 300 Spartans who faced the Persian army, despite being his fellow citizens, Marcus Junius Brutus betrayed his father Julius Caesar by joining those who murdered him, La Malinche betrayed her Mexican people by joining the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés, Benedict Arnold betrayed his homeland and George Washington by going over to the English side, handing over the Military Fort he commanded, Karel Curda betrayed his fellow Czechoslovakians in WWII, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg betrayed the United States by leaking the atomic bomb plans to the Soviet Union.

Betrayal always comes from parents, siblings, relatives, and friends. Our enemies cannot betray us because they have not earned our trust; it is those close to us who betray us.

But today I want to highlight what can be the saddest betrayal of all and it is when we betray ourselves by betraying our principles, values, the causes in which we believe and even betraying our dreams.

Inspired by Matthew 26: 47-56
