Technology and Big Business and Politicians all mash up into a stuttering sense of it all - with the potential that the legacy you and I leave behind is that of a rapidly decaying human environment - what will our children think of it all?
Fortunately, help is at hand as some of the brightest and best minds shine a light on a safer path. Hopefully.
Whilst not a billionaire, Stewart Brand inspired a generation back in the late 60's and 70's. He's inspiring people still - me included. In his monumentally magical Stanford speech, Steve Jobs citied Mr Brand for much of what had made him who he was. Who Steve jobs was has made much of what happens in the connected space and much more today - to a greater or lesser extent. Apple's co-founder knew a thing or two it seems, and whilst his interpersonal skills are often recalled as not the best, his student address revealed a profound humanity.
Connectivity. With people, their ideas, challenges, hopes and dreams. An 'old world order' was simply connected by wealth and power - and dynasty. Anything that didn't sustain all of that was safely locked away. As to some of their good causes...Philanthropy or Tax Mitigation?
It seems we have more billionaires than you can shake a stick at these days.
How many of them have an egalitarian vision, mission, and a purpose? Surely, the liberation of knowledge, ideas, and inspiration that criss cross the planet every nanosecond of the day mean we can all persue a better way - a shared way - a sustainable way.
One Billionaire - and 'a la Jobs' contrarian I can quote, is Elon Reeve Musk:-
To accelerate the advent of sustainable transport by bringing compelling mass market electric cars to market as soon as possible...
I am increasingly of the view that lazily leaving things the way they are - especially in the automotive arena - is foolish. Not as in the 'Stay Young - Stay Foolish' maxim, but in the stark reality that much can and should be done here and now.
I make no apology for running a repeat of this theme in such posts, and of putting up the ironic cartoon from Joel Pett I often have in mind when discussing opportunity and progress.
As Formula E races again in the United States of America in a few days, that event in California will without doubt help progress things for vehicle electrification and electric vehicles (there is an important distinction). So pleased that Richard Branson is more actively engaged - hopefully in LA following on from Miami!
Incidentally, I shared my thoughts on all of this late last year - Link:- 3 BIG Reasons why I think this is a winning formula.
Energy, its source and distribution, is the pivot around almost all of our modern life. Managing that energy efficiently and effectively is under microscopic analysis by all the race teams running electric cars and I have an increasing sense that we are about to see some exciting and rapid progress as players and industries join forces for their greater good, and ours.
The Human Race has been run for a lot longer than any FIA event of course - but let's ensure we never see the checkered flag!
It's what the world needs now...
We must keep looking - don't settle.

9 年Yes, we can all be doing the right thing for the benefit of our next generation - what's stopping us? We can debate this forever - what we need is people to take action. How many people reading Roger's post drive an EV? If not, why don't you - what's preventing you taking that action? I have driven a Renault Zoe for one year now - I use it like any other car - 17,000 miles on. Roger, might be worth sharing some stories about what you drive.
