What if work didn't suck?

Some people say “A change is as good as a rest.”
Those people are wrong. A rest is WAY better.
?
???? This week I made my triumphant (tbc) return to LinkedIn after abandoning my business social media channels for a month.
?
?? The break was blissful. It gave me a hell of a lot of time back (it’s seriously scary how many hours I lose to content creation and aimless scroll time ??)
?
But more importantly, the headspace that came as a result of the rest gave me something a lot of business owners would kill for:
?
? CLARITY. ?
?
?? The kind of clarity that doesn’t come from pushing through, persevering or ploughing on.
?
?? The kind of clarity that can only come from a mind at rest.
?
A mind that will only get into deep, focused state when distractions and noise are removed.
?
So, what flavour of clarity did I discover?
?
?? I realised that I want to get more specific about the work that I do, and I’ll be changing this newsletter in line with that new focus.
?
What’s the new focus?
?
? HELPING WORK SUCK LESS ?
?
It’s come to my attention that work sucks.
Even if you love what you do, it sucks that we have to do it. Our days are not always going to be sunshine and rainbows, and I think we should be more honest about that.

So, I want to explore how, and if – given this context – we can build a career that sucks less and doesn’t cost our sanity. ?
?
It’ll include the following:
?
?? Insights around how to mitigate the suckier parts of your work to make it more tolerable
???Honest conversations about the world of work and the impact it has on our lives
?? The ways we can get our work and wellbeing working better together
?? Exploring how we can create better businesses for individuals, communities, and the wider world
?? How to find and do work that works for you
?? Discussions around how to balance the demands of Capitalism with our own human needs
?? Musings on what it means to do ‘good work’
?? How you can build your career in your own way, by trying different working styles, practices and formats
?
?? Through this newsletter, you’ll find out more about yourself and the work you do.
?
Hopefully, those realisations will be useful, and they’ll help you to build a better, more sustainable, more conscious career.
?
?? It also might challenge you a little bit and feel uncomfortable at times… but I promise I’ll try and keep the existential crises to a minimum. We’re aiming for breakthroughs over breakdowns, here ??
?
?? If that sounds good to you, I look forward to having you along for the ride.
?
?? If not, I hope you enjoyed the “Content Coaching Over Coffee” newsletter while she lasted, and will join me in wishing her a long and happy retirement.
?
Change isn’t as good as a rest. But it’s a pretty decent silver medal.

1 年A well earned rest Alice - good to see you back on here though

1 年Pushing on is no good, when you're going in the wrong direction. That only takes you further away from where you want to be. Good job on you, stopping and reorienting yourself. There is much wisdom in that. Stop, drop, and mull.
