What Wicked Taught Me About Leadership (Yes, I’m Serious)

I’ve watched Wicked three times now (thank you, streaming services!). The first time, I was in the movie theater, popcorn in hand, and completely in awe of the cast's raw talent. The second time? Strictly a solo sing-along in my living room. But by the third time, something new stood out: lessons about leadership hidden in the story’s twists and turns.

At first glance, Elphaba (the “Wicked” Witch) and Glinda (the “Good” Witch) seem like polar opposites. Elphaba is fiery, principled, and unafraid to challenge the status quo, while Glinda is charming, optimistic, and the queen of social savviness. But when they embrace their differences, they create a dynamic partnership that defies gravity. Their journey offers some wicked-good lessons for building strong leadership teams.

Here are three leadership lessons from Wicked that left me spellbound:

Embrace Different Leadership Styles

Like Elphaba and Glinda, leaders bring unique strengths and perspectives to the table. Some lead with bold vision and relentless passion, while others excel at fostering relationships and finding creative solutions. Teams thrive when these differences are celebrated – not just tolerated. Instead of seeking the “perfect” leader, focus on building a diverse team where everyone’s unique contributions are valued and respected. Diversity in leadership styles isn’t a challenge to overcome; it’s an advantage to embrace.

Don’t Just Be Popular – Be Impactful

Charm and charisma can open doors, but authentic leadership requires so much more. It’s about having the courage to make tough decisions, the willingness to grow, and the ability to prioritize substance over style. Glinda’s journey from popularity to purpose is a reminder that being liked isn’t enough—real leadership is about standing for something meaningful, even when it’s hard. Because let’s face it: For Good doesn’t happen without a little grit and grace.

The Art of Resilience

If Wicked teaches us anything, it’s that life will throw curveballs, but resilience is what transforms obstacles into opportunities. Elphaba faces countless misunderstandings, betrayals, and being labeled “wicked.” Yet, despite all of this, she rises above with determination. As leaders, we can channel that same green-fueled grit to build resilient teams. Resilient teams don’t just endure setbacks – they thrive through them. Fostering a culture of resilience can equip your team to adapt, innovate, and maintain a positive outlook, no matter the odds.

So, what can Wicked teach us about leadership? Quite a bit, actually. It’s not just about being the most powerful or the most popular; it’s about embracing differences, making a real impact, and bouncing back when the world brings you down.
