The What & Why of Mindfulness for Students

When we talk about being mindful, what we essentially mean is to reconnect with ourselves. If adults find it hard to remember the last time they sat down comfortably and thought about how they felt, imagine the state of students. The hustle and bustle of a student’s life is no secret.?

Cultivating mindfulness in students helps them become aware of their thoughts, feelings, and emotions in the present moment by paying attention to them on purpose without being critical of their experiences.?

It is believed that when a person is aware of oneself and their environment, one can genuinely weigh out the consequences of their actions, regulate emotions better, and make healthier decisions in life to cope with stress. What if students can experience such a level of awareness?

Imagine if a student missed an important class, lost an assignment, or forgot about a test. How would they react? Most students would end up feeling frustrated, which might influence their behavior; for instance, they might yell at someone else or be overly critical of themselves.

Practicing mindfulness helps students foresee through the cloud of emotion and judgment and respond effectively to a given situation. Say, when a person is feeling angry, simply taking a ‘Mindful Break,’ i.e., pausing and becoming aware of one’s emotional state, can help them respond to the situation assertively rather than aggressively. That sounds like a tip that might be helpful for students, right?

If you want your students to experience mindfulness, keep following this space.
