Welcome to this week’s edition of the RFS Report! ??
What we’re reading right now ??
What’s going on with the job market. November’s job report came out last week. Unemployment is now at 3.7% (down from September and October) and the US added 199,000 new jobs. According to Biden, inflation is down by two thirds , which means the soft landing officials have been hoping for may be in reach. But retail employment is down significantly - which indicates many businesses are forecasting lower-than-expected holiday shopping spend.
Escaping the hire-layoff cycle in tech. According to General Assembly, 55% of tech leaders expect hiring to pick up in the next six months . But how can HR teams help avoid the large swings in hiring we’ve seen the last few years? (hint: the answer includes AI).
What’s the future of higher ed? A recent survey shows 45% of companies plan to cut Bachelor’s degree requirements for some roles in 2024, and many eliminated degree requirements in 2023. And with all the backlash some higher education institutions have received recently - some advocate for less importance to be placed on college entirely.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report. This came out in May, but there’s a lot of interesting predictions about which job functions will grow or decline the fastest. They predict (perhaps unsurprisingly) more demand for digital/AI roles - but also an increase in the need for alternative types of teachers and agriculture-related roles.

Where do people want to work? ??
We shared a poll last week asking our followers which company size they’d be most interested in work for, and answers were pretty split.
Interestingly, most of our followers are least interested in jobs with companies with more than 1,000 people - perhaps because of all the restructuring over the last couple years. Most said they wanted to work for growing or mid-size businesses with at least 20 people.
