What were the most commonly vaccinated-against diseases in 2023?

We get a lot of questions from our customers around what vaccine stock to order when starting a new travel service. We’ve done our analysis to see what diseases were most vaccinated against in 2023 - here's our big reveal!

Leading the pack - Hepatitis A and B - 33%

Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B respectively were some of the most vaccinated against this year by pharmacies and clinics using Nuumad. 17% of all vaccines given were for Hepatitis A and 16% were for Hepatitis B. This is unsurprising as Hep A vaccines are deemed as essential in most countries by NaTHNaC.

2nd place - Rabies - 21% each

As rabies is a fatal disease it makes sense that many patients have chosen to pay for this vaccine. We accept that there may have been a surge of patients wanting rabies vaccines this autumn due to earlier vaccine shortages so we are looking forward to reviewing this data in the next quarter.

Tied for 2nd place - Typhoid - 21%

Typhoid is also often Recommended as essential by NaTHNaC and as a relatively low-cost vaccine we understand why just as many patients elect to get vaccinated against this disease as Rabies.

DTP - 8%

Similar to Hep A, DTP is also an essential vaccine for most countries. The % of usage is lower however because so many younger travellers benefit from their childhood immunisation still protecting them. None the less, one to keep in your fridge for sure.

Cholera - 7%

We’ve seen an increased cholera uptake in the autumn, possibly due to more people travelling to remote areas in South-East Asia and Africa where access to clean water is a bit more difficult. And who would want their holiday ruined by something so easily preventable?

Japanese encephalitis - 6%

We often get asked about JE, which is sometimes deemed too expensive by patients. With our built-in price calculator you should be able to have a more informed discussions around risk vs disease with your patients during your consultation. As JE has very serious and life-threatening consequences, we'd considering stocking it as well. You can also always use our Cheat sheet to reference key bits of info about this disease and vaccines ??

Yellow Fever, MenACWY, Tick borne encephalitis - remaining 4%

Whereas these vaccines were not given nearly as frequently as others (especially Yellow Fever as not all pharmacies are certified to offer this), we still recommend stocking them as they are on both ‘Recommended for all' and ‘Recommended for some travellers' lists on NaTHNaC, not to mention countries with certificate requirements. These diseases can have potentially serious or fatal consequences so please ensure you are up to date and have access to stock as and when needed.
