What a website should be ?

Most of us have been through the process of doing either our own or a clients website. Where the requirement list the bottom of the heart is to ensure you get conversions and sales through it, but also have a secret list of being an eye candy, show stopper, different, out of this world, unique, innovative, class apart and what not.
You want your website to be the head turner where peoples jaw drops the moment they type your url and hit enter. On the contrary i have seen amazing websites with all the bells and whistles not turn a visitor into a customer and plain jane websites acquiring more than expected results.
So what is your website and how it should be. A website is your sales person, its your advertising on the web and its your marketing collateral. The audience of your website is your prospective customer. He pays a visit to you when he has a problem or a requirement at hand, his head is filled with a few questions.
- The top most being am i at the right spot where they have a solution to my problem ?
- Are they the right guys with experience and credentials to do the job for me ?
- Are they costly, cheap, rightly priced ?
- How should i further communicate with them and establish the connect ?
So while making your websites if you just answer the customers questions and follow a good design hygiene and major job is done. Also try to keep it as simple as possible.
- Use less jargons and use the words that are running in the customers head.
- Use appropriate landing pages for segmented keywords to ensure maximum relevancy of what the client has searched and has landed on.
- Try to have a one liner pitch at the start and read more section later. the online liner should not be more than 10 words.
- Try to get the required action done from the customer and make them hit the call now , contact us or the buy now button.
Your websites can also be a knowledge portal, a product information website but what ever it is try to follow the simple rule of trying to keep it simple for the customer to access and consume. once the first two steps are done the rest should be a easy task.
