What is website evolution?

I've been thinking a lot lately about this idea of website evolution–a commitment to the continual improvement of your website. The trend is for companies to replace their website every 3-5 years, but I prefer to build a solid WordPress website and then consistently evolve it. This way, you’re constantly building on previous efforts. There’s always opportunity in the present moment to make your website more effective.

Ultimately, you want your website to bring in more revenue. That’s why I've been assigning KPIs (key performance indicators) to every website change I make and tracking how that website change is affecting revenue.

Changes that evolve your website:

  • New articles or blog posts
  • Adding content to the pages that explain your products or services
  • On-page SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  • Navigation improvements
  • UX (User Experience)
  • Graphic design
  • CTA (Calls to Action)
  • Video
  • Page speed
  • Website maintenance

The main advantage comes when you're using data to keep refining. Track how people are using your site and measure how changes affect the percentage of visitors who purchase. You can also see what your competitors are doing and how you can rank higher than them on Google for specific search terms. This is how you find opportunities for your website to increase its revenue production.
