What is web accessibility?

Web accessibility guarantees that websites on the World Wide Web are easily accessible and free of impediments that limit engagement for persons of different disabilities.

All users would have equal access to information and functionality on websites when they are properly designed, developed, and edited. Unfortunately, many sites and products are already designed with accessibility hurdles that make them difficult or impossible to use for some users.

The web is practically centered to work for everyone, regardless of their technology, software, language, culture, geographical location, or abilities.

Different types of impairment and Accessibility techniques

The different types of impairment are mentioned below:

  • Visual:?Complete blindness or color blindness or poor eyesight, visual problems like refractive errors and blurry visions
  • Physical:?Difficulty using a keyboard or mouse
  • Cognitive:?Learning difficulties or poor memory
  • Literacy:?Reading problems, finding words difficult
  • Hearing:?Auditory problems like deafness and hearing impairments, difficulty hearing well or hearing clearly

The techniques which help users to access web content include:

  • Screen Reader
  • WAT (web accessibility toolbar)
  • Screen Magnifier
  • Bluetooth keyboards
  • Speech recognition tools

And hence, Web Accessibility is a method of ensuring that everyone, including the disabled, has access to the web and the internet as a whole.

To put it another way, we may say:

Online accessibility refers to the ability of persons with impairments to utilise the Internet.

Thus, we may infer that persons with impairments can perceive, operate, understand, and interact with the Web, as well as contribute to it. Online accessibility also benefits persons with temporary or permanent impairments, which may include age, a slower internet connection, a broken arm, and so on.
