What to Wear?

What to Wear?

Before you get defensive, calm down; we know what you're thinking. "Um, women DO NOT dress for men!" And yes, it is definitely true that women do not compromise their style and fashion choices simply to please the opposite sex.

We are always free to wear what we want, and no one is going to stand in the way of  freely expressing ourselves and looking damn good doing it, right?

Blue and green should never be seen, or should they?

Do the traditional rules of dressing still apply?

The world of high fashion always claims to be about breaking rules. Take a look at the catwalks at London Fashion Week

But when it comes to our everyday choice of clothes there's always someone piping up about some longstanding rule. The rules have such longevity because most people like having guidance about how to dress, says Andrew Groves, who heads the University of Westminster's fashion department. "We all like to think we're individuals but rules give people a certain security when it comes to fashion."

So are they arbitrary and outdated or do they still apply?

Don't do denim with denim

It's a look that "contravenes all known laws of human decency" says the Guardian's fashion commentator Hadley Freeman.

She's not alone in her disgust but despite all the haters double denim has made a comeback on the catwalks this year, even appearing on the cover of Vogue.

That's exactly where it should stay, says Groves. "Only a young, beautiful, 6ft model can make double denim look vaguely OK. That's because it's just not right."

If you insist on giving it a go, mix things up, say the pundits.

"Wear different washes rather than denims that are too matchy, matchy," says Poppy Dinsey, founder of outfit sharing site What I Wore Today (WIWT).

But remember, when double denim goes wrong it goes really wrong. See image to the right. Enough said.

You probably have a pretty clear idea of what you think is sexy and date-appropriate (lipstick, heels, cute dresses) and what falls on the frumpy side of the spectrum (sweats, turtlenecks, button-downs). But you might be surprised by what turns guys on

A T-Shirt and Jeans

It’s the vanilla ice cream of outfits. But you know what? It’s hard to go wrong with a classic. A T-shirt that fits just snug enough and a pair of jeans that accentuate your shape scream girl next door in all the right ways. You know what else is great about vanilla ice cream? You can add anything you want to it. It’s plain, but you can make it fancy with some simple additions.

Women that wear their guys' t-shirt or sweatshirt also profess that they love to get a whiff of his lingering scent in the clothes. Plus, for some reason, over-sized and baggy shirts (usually without pants) are a turn on. Besides the visual appeal of a girl in just his t-shirt and underwear, this is also a subliminal message to him that you're all his, and that you're proud to be.

Turtlenecks

What’s sexier than looking like the late Steve Jobs? Kidding. Believe it or not, the T-neck is kind of sexy. It’s comfortable and cute and even a little mysterious. And women usually wear them in the wintertime, a.k.a. the season of snuggling.

The ponytail is a style that works on a date and at the gym. At work and on weekends. Does it get any better? Yes.

With five minutes and these simple how-to videos featuring stylist Ryan Trygstad of Marie Robinson Salon in New York City, you can braid, tease, or twist your pony from “eh” to “amazing!”

Work Clothes,

I know that plain black pencil skirt and blouse makes you feel super uptight. Perhaps that suit and heels isn’t comfortable at all. Maybe that apron is dirty and greasy. Whether you work on Wall Street or at Whataburger, your work clothes can be hot. It shows us that you're independent and obviously are intelligent and skilled enough to get that job, and that’s sexy. Besides, all men have had fantasies ranging from getting with the cafeteria worker to getting with the CEO.

Legs or cleavage - never both

If there is one rule all women should follow, this is it, say the same fashion experts. "It's the absolute golden rule," says celebrity stylist Martine Alexander.

"One or the other, never, ever both. It looks cheap, simple as that. No-one with any sense of style likes to see it all at once," she says.

The rule is about having one focal point, says Groves. "You don't want different parts of your outfit competing for attention."

It's even emerging as a rule for men, says Alexander. The deep V-neck T-shirt, modelled by the likes of Russell Brand, is becoming increasingly popular and a way for males to show off their chest muscle. "Please don't wear one with shorts, it's too much flesh," she says.

Thank you …Salwar kameez is the traditional Indian clothing for women. Due to its high popularity in the region of Punjab, shalwar kameez is commonly referred to as Punjabi suit. The fashion of Shalwar Kameez in India is not new.

Since the past many few centuries, women have been wearing this wonderful attire that is absolutely decent to wear and also lends a graceful look to its wearer Infact, it were the pathans of Kabul, who can be attributed the credit for introducing this dress in South Asia.

Liked what you just read?

In the contemporary times, fashion designers are coming up with more and more innovative styles, designs and patterns. Today, there are varied necklines and even there is a lot of scope for experimenting with different decorative items for ornamentation such as sequins, mirrors, embroideries and so on.

Suits are stitched in different styles having different shapes. Ideally, the length of kameez should be knee length according to the traditional style. However, the modern customized suits have different kinds of cuts and shapes. Apart from the usual salwar kameez and churidar suit, trouser suit also known as parallel suit is also quite popular in India.

Your comment ….?

Shoes and bags/shoes and belts should always match

Nowadays being fashionable is all about being individual, quirky and eccentric –Anyway, women's bags come in all sorts of crazy colours, fabrics and sizes now, you'd be hard pressed to get complementing shoes,

Because you are women, people will force their thinking on you, their boundaries on you. They will tell you how to dress.

Beauty is about perception, not about make-up. I think the beginning of all beauty is knowing and liking oneself. You can't put on make-up, or dress yourself, or do you hair with any sort of fun or joy if you're doing it from a position of correction.

I love shopping; I'm a jeans and a T-shirt kind of girl, but I go classy when I dress up - with a little bit of sexy.
