What we see is not what others see.

This article will help you shed some light on what are you not seeing in your business and life that others do see.
If you haven't seen it, in 2013 Dove launched an advertising campaign that went viral.
Youtube has it over 10 million; it was shared at the time 40,000 time on Facebook.
I have used this advert a lot when i am training and coaching as it continues to open up peoples perspectives.
The campaign was called "Real Beauty Sketches".
I have put the shorter clip here, the extended version is at the bottom.
What they created was both very creative and very revealing.
Using a former FBI Forensic artist, he would draw a woman describing herself and then draw the stranger describing the same women on different days.
The artist would never really know who exactly he was drawing.
The team creating the advert set out a social experiment as much as a setting out an advertising campaign.
Not knowing it would work, not having any script of what they would be said after seeing the drawing.
Afterwards, it would show the women the difference in how they described themselves to how others who did not know them described them.
All of the drawings were made from the descriptions, the artist never saw the individuals until post the event.
All of the described by others, the faces were more warm, appealing, softer, bringing out beauty, than the descriptions which were given by individuals describing themselves.
We are all, males and females, at times very guilty of not celebrating our truly wonderful we are.
We all can be too critical of themselves.
The tagline for the advert was: "YOU are more beautiful than you think!"
How very true!
According to statistics, only 4% of women feel good about themselves across the globe. Setting out to tilt the scale into proving how we can improve self-image and self-esteem can only be a good thing. It is part of my business mission.
Alan Watts (was a British writer and speaker known for interpreting and popularising Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism for a Western audience)
He brings up a funny notion about seashells criticizing each other seashells. Tieing this into a broader, more serious concept related to the way we humans tend to separate ourselves from the world around us.
(which one is the fat ugly one?)
He says:
"You know we pick up shells – I always keep one around as sort of an example for many things – and say, "My goodness, isn't that gorgeous?
There's not an aesthetic fault in it anywhere, it's absolutely perfect."
Continuing, he ponders...
"Now I wonder, I wonder if these fish look at each other's shells and say, "Don't you think she's kind of fat?
Oh my, those markings aren't really very well spaced. Pssshhh." Cause' that's what humans do, see we don't realise that all of us in our various goings-on and behaviours and so on are just as marvellous – more marvellous, much more complicated, much more interesting."
He is so correct in his commentary, humans are marvellous in so many ways, can we get better absolutely, can we have an impact, yes set out to create and by setting examples for others. In our day to day lives, in our work, in our businesses.
What do you choose to see every day?
What actions are you taking every day to bring fulfilment to you and your families lives?
I recently asked a client (business owner) how much did he spend on his TV. He told me it was approx £800 to £1000. I then asked him how much he had spent on business books had he brought in the same time period.
£10 was the response.
He wants to achieve business success by the time he is 50 and be able to retire. Currently, he is 30.
Is this a balanced approach I enquired, a reflection of your motivation and purpose you have shared with me?
A day later he texted me saying he's sold and downgraded his tv and invested in audible and has booked a 1-2-1.
The light bulb moment.
External advice presented with evidence can change the way we look at our selves, how we behave and how we set out our mindset.
I am 42
I plan to (kinda) of retire on: March 8 2043
Number of days until retirement: 8144
The approximate number of workdays: 5817
The approximate number of Tuesday mornings: 1161 !!!
Only 1161
One thousand, One Hundred and Sixty One Is not very many Tuesdays left,
I am 100% committed to achieving my business and personal objectives before my birthday deadline in 2043.
I am focused on supporting others to discover what they can't see what is right in front of themselves in their lives and businesses.
I have a few questions for you.
What are you not seeing in your business and life that others do see?
That could save you time, money and stress.
How many Tuesday do you have left before you wish to step back?
Are you on track to smash through your objectives?
The creative director of the Dove Campaign said
"Everything is a conversation really,"
It can set us on to a path of self-discovery.
You are a sea shell,
You can dovetail your life and business and say;
"My goodness, isn't that gorgeous?
Reignite your seashell and your mindset with a discovery call with me, just come along and say hi.
I know what I am doing every Tuesday, would you like to?
If you say no to this, what are you saying YES to?
Thanks for reading, would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Daniel :-)

3 年Some really important insights here, Dan. I don't know whether I'm surprised or not that so many people describe themselves less attractively than others see them. I wonder how that translates into other characteristics, particularly around less visible things like personality. Real food for thought.
Getting busy people fixing tough problems... Blending process improvement with behavioural science to unlock exceptional performance.
3 年I remember that campaign - it was powerful. And I'm sure if we could repeat with what's under the surface, the perceptions gap would be even greater. That's a very specific plan you have there - how do you use it to best inform your shorter term plans?
