What we see is not what we get

What we see is not what we get

Appearance is not everything,?

Or so they say,?

But appearance still builds expectation, it sets the tone for what we expect to happen next.?

A dashboard is not better than what lies behind, an analysis not better than the underlying process, an AI not better than the supporting data.?

We know that there is most often another layer inside that is what things actually depend on. The truth behind the truth.?

Things are not always what they seem

Like an onion or a Russian doll.?

But instead of moving forward we get distracted and stop to rage, laugh or cry about our broken expectations.?

And we should, but we should move on.?

Because it might not be the fake elevator which is the most interesting thing, but what lies at the top of the stairs.

One Thursday in Brno

It’s rare that I will go to extreme lengths to make sure I can see all the sessions at a conference. I might have a meeting somewhere in between, decide to get some work done or work on my own presentation.?

Think that is life for most speakers.

We use the time, because we normally have heard most presentations in one variation or another before or there is always that obviously sponsored session where somebody boringly drones on about their own product magnificence while you slowly die a little and curse you ever entered the room.?

I think you heard that session as well.

But some conferences are different because the ambition is different.

And for me the Marketing Festival in Brno was one of these.?

With the combined speaking power of Tom Fishburne , Cassie Kozyrkov , Richard Shotton , Dr Grace Kite , Jenni Romaniuk , Jono Alderson , Scott Brinker , André Morys and I, Jindrich Faborsky had honestly handpicked an extreme program compared to most conferences I come across.?

Far above.?

And we all went on stage and covered the most current issues in and around marketing from our specific angles.?

We might not help the expert become radically better in their individual narrow field, but our ambition was more about leveling the playing field and establishing a shared narrative around data, success, marketing, AI… you name it.

Because with presentations and speakers "like these" it’s not always just about sharing “the latest latest”, but about establishing a foundation for the benefit of the community to grow on.?

Creating a basis for conversations, ambitions and a shared vision to push the boundaries of where marketing in the Czech Republic will go in 2024.

To get there, we spend more time telling stories and building a core narrative than we do teaching. Yes, some teaching is always there, but it was more about tying things together than anything else, trying to create one patchwork blanket from the individual marketing pieces.?

We attend conferences to learn and get updated, to have moments of insights, inspirations and the energy to move forward. Marketing Festival created a lot of these moments and I think we all left a little better for it.?
