What we can learn from undertaking training...

A recent experience got me thinking about my approach to life and my work. It was a good reminder of how to approach things and that there are key elements that I need to incorporate into everything I do.
I was asked by someone to provide some training on a topic that I was familiar with but where I had no background in training. As a consequence I was a bit nervous because I wanted to ensure he got the outcome from the training that he wanted as he trusted me implicitly.
The knowledge and experience I was drawing on was sound but I made sure I did some retraining as part of the process. I felt that investing in refreshing my knowledge would ultimately deliver the result needed and I subsequently realised that there were likely to be other people that needed similar help so it was time well spent.
I felt that I could help him so I created a basic plan in order to develop his knowledge taking into consideration his own experience and expectations as he had no knowledge of the skills needed and we were starting from scratch as was I to some extent as I do not come from a coaching background. However he was willing to work and I am always happy to work with any anyone that is fully committed.
We completed the training and he is delighted so I thought I would set out what we learned and will continue to apply going forward.
Achieving goals is not easy
The biggest goals in life are not easy to achieve. You have to be patient and work hard.
Having fun
If you want to achieve anything it is much easier if you are having fun whilst doing it. It becomes less of a chore and an experience you can enjoy.
The end goal
Always keep your end goal in sight but don't become frustrated by the speed that you get there. Everyone goes at a different pace and you will get there in the end.
Bite size chunks
Most things cannot be achieved quickly and by breaking down any challenge into bite size chunks it is less daunting and easier to work through.
Know your limitations
Nobody is an expert in everything. If you are not sure about something then there are always resources out there with the knowledge and other people that can help.
Setbacks
Things do not always go to plan but it is important not to let this push you off track and stop you achieving your goal. Keep going.
Commitment
Know what you want to achieve and commit to it. Don't let others put you off and do it with full commitment.
So who was my client?
Well to be fair it was not a client, it was my 4 year old boy who asked me to help teach him how to ride a bike! I can genuinely say that it is not that easy but I was so proud when he pedalled off by himself. If you ever need insolvency advice then I am always happy to help and if you are in need of any tips to teach your child to cycle then please get in touch!
