Lewis Capaldi has announced he’s cancelling all his work commitments between now and when he plays Glastonbury at the end of the month.
The singer-songwriter says he’s taking time out to “rest and recover”.
"I need to take these three weeks to be Lewis from Glasgow for a bit, spend some time with my family and friends and do normal things that are an important part of me feeling better,” he writes on his social media. “I'm getting the help and support I need from the incredible people around me who I'm so grateful for."
Lewis has been refreshingly honest about his mental health issues. In his recent Netflix documentary 'How I’m Feeling Now’ he talks about how his rapid rise to fame took its toll, leading to struggles with anxiety and depression, and resulting in panic attacks.??
In the documentary, he describes how his panic attacks feel.
"I'm completely disconnected from reality. I can't breathe, I can't feel breath going in. I get dizzy, I feel like something's happening in my head and I'm sweating,” he says. "I'm convulsing. Either I feel like I'm going to be stuck like that forever or I'm going to die."
By sharing the realities of what a panic attack can feel like Lewis has reminded us that it doesn’t matter what you have achieved, or how successful you are, mental health challenges can affect anyone at any time.?

In the documentary, Lewis also discusses his Tourette's syndrome diagnosis, and how despite the obstacles he faced, he has managed to achieve great success in the music industry. He now uses his fame to promote acceptance and understanding of neurodiversity.?
Despite his chart-topping success, Lewis admits to battling with his self-esteem, and struggling with imposter syndrome, worrying that he shouldn’t be where he is now, often questioning his own abilities.
"I can’t imagine being in a position where I think I deserve to be doing this," he says in the documentary.
Due to his willingness to talk openly about his mental health, Lewis has become an important role model for anyone who is struggling. So, what can we learn from him??
