What We Can Learn From Kanye West's Latest Declaration...

Welcome to the Project Get Out Your Own Way Newsletter! Make yourself at home…virtually. Subscribe so you’re notified of the next issue. And it will give you amazing skin. I cannot prove that, but what if?

What we can indeed learn about showing up from Kanye West’s latest relationship shenanigans…excuse me...his latest interview about said shenanigans

…as well as from Will and Jada Smith.?

So if you’re wondering what I’m talking about, allow me to fill you in. But first…

If you’re one of those people who hates celebrity news and considers yourself much too evolved, mature and grounded to give any attention whatsoever to a celebrity or influencer, you may want to exit now.?

A girl flipping her hair to support the point.

While I can appreciate all that in you - kind of - I suppose I’m less mature and evolved. However I’m smart, very good at what I do, and this is my newsletter. Plus if you stick with me, there’s some real value here.?

Kanye West, also known as Ye, also known as Kim Kardashian’s babies’ daddy, also known as “CEO/King of the Keep Kanye Relevant Club” recently made an interesting declaration - another one.?

In an interview with Hollywood Unlocked, while referencing he and ex Kim Kardashian West’s split, the rapper and fashion designer states that they will not be “going full Will and Jada.” Meaning they do not plan to overshare, or be what many consider, too transparent.?

There was actually a petition started online to have the media stop interviewing the Smiths. There was another camp who called on the vocal couple themselves to stop talking about their marriage.?

Oh the shade of it all!

Although I considered signing that petition myself, and I’m a fan ????♀?

The thought of Kanye West reigning himself AND his very well known wife in from being too transparent is quite interesting.?

Especially when his transparency and at times, massive desire to hear himself talk, seem to know no end.?

Here Ye is, although respectfully - he essentially said he meant no disrespect, just using “these names as an example" - being kind of judgy of Will and Jada Smith’s level of transparency.?

I suppose better late than never, but I cannot help thinking, ‘dude you should’ve done this months ago.’ You’ve been oversharing and some would argue, being downright obnoxious for the last year or two.?

So what can we learn from this? Well I’m really glad you asked:) A few things:

  1. Taking this advice from Kanye - I know, I know…some of you never thought that would be a consideration for you - about personal matters is probably a good thing. There is a place and time to share what you enjoy in the bedroom, or the dream you had about kidnapping your ex’s new love interest and tying him/her/them to the hood of your car. If you’re sharing that with strangers, the right place and time is pretty limited.?
  2. Regarding business, particularly sharing, talking about, branding, and promoting what you offer, that is a different story. I recommend you absolutely “go full Will and Jada.”

I think there is not enough sharing about the value, brilliance, effectiveness, etc of many of you. When was the last time you tooted your own horn? Or served as your own cheerleader?

And without feeling guilty or apologizing for doing so?

A key part of bossing up - really - is getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. It may not feel nice or natural to tell five prospects in a row that you’re the best at what you do.?

Some of you would rather have a root canal than get up in front of an audience and list the benefits - not features - of your product or service.?

And point out that at least some of those benefits are unique to you, your system or framework.?

My friends, marketing is where you need to “go full Will and Jada.” Even when it’s uncomfortable, you think you’re bugging people, you don’t feel like it. Even if __________ feel in the blank.?

I think it’s a good thing Kanye plans to be more measured going forward, in how he talks about his relationship (of course he didn’t say he’d pull back on talking about his current or future love interest, his music, fashion, political beliefs, etc so there’s that).?

However, regarding the 3 Bs: your brand , your business and your bottom line, you should be Kanye circa 2019-2021 (and probably Kanye about everything besides his relationship with his wife). Talk about it. Opine about it. Share it. Show the value in it. Unapologetically and repeatedly.?

After awhile, it will become less difficult. You’ll do it as easily as…

Kanye, Will and Jada.?
