1?? What Putin has Achieved
The abject destruction of his own nation’s interests.
There’s an excellent long analysis from Ruth Deyermond on what Russia has achieved in six months of war waged on its neighbour. The short version?
“Russia’s war against Ukraine has been an abject failure that has done unprecedented damage to Russian national interests.”
Deyermond says Putin has done four things:
For a leader obsessed with the past, Lawrence Freedman concludes:
“Putin’s problem is more with ultra-nationalists, who lament that their leader has had the right ideas but not the necessary ruthlessness to implement them.”
Does Putin’s hubris mean Ukraine can win back its country from occupation?
As summer draws to a close, both sides are digging in. The FT quotes a former Ukrainian defence minister:
“The US gives us enough to stop the Russians from advancing, to reverse some gains, to shape the operational direction, but absolutely, clearly, not enough for a major counteroffensive.”
Ukraine has held, but winter is coming.

2 年Thank you for allowing me to clarify my cryptic comment. It was directed at the 1st article on with its geopolitical assertions about President Putin having destroyed Russia's regional leadership and international reputation, undermined its national and trying to be Stalin. I am no apologist for Putin or Russia. But I do wonder when did the collective West affirm or accept Russia's membership, contributions, leadership, reputation or national interest prior to the invasion of Ukraine? Never. It faced collective rejection, regarded as a defeated nation not deserving of respect or even existence, and its security concerns could be dismissed. We all need to be concerned with the current world order where a few can determine if entire nations are worth being part of the world system. That order and accompanying attitudes are no doubt undermining world peace and security. We need a collective international relations system with embedded values of mutual respect and inclusivity.
