What is Vipassana?

If you are not familiar with the term Vipassana then you might find it interesting to learn that this, comparatively new, Buddhist practice is the origin of the increasingly popularized ‘mindfulness movement’. To be “mindful” has become a part of our everyday language. “Take three mindful breaths”, your yoga teacher might instruct intermittently throughout the class. But, what does it mean to “be mindful”?

Vipassana offers a method for “Knowing what is happening, while it is happening”. It is based on Buddha’s original teachings and is a return to practices described in the original Pali texts. Vipassana looks at these teachings from a pragmatic and non-religious stance, while staying relevant to our modern times and every-day lives. From this perspective, to “be mindful” is to understand our everyday experiences, especially our own thoughts and feelings, from a particular philosophical stance and to engage in practices that free us from our own anxiety, depression and obsessions without having to strive to be “a better person”. If you want to find out more about this philosophical stance and the related practices, then join our retreat at the end of this month.
