Did you know that rulers of kingdoms have been using consultants, trusted advisors and coaches for thousands of years? Why??
In a nutshell, because they needed an edge over their competition, they knew they didn’t have all the answers and the fate of their kingdom could rely on one decision.?
Many of you understand the value of having a consultant or coach to guide you in your business, but in this day and age it is becoming very confusing determining who to work with.
I say to you, a good place to start when considering working with a coach or consultant is to find someone in your industry or the area you need an expert in, choose someone who aligns with your core values.
I want to tell you this ancient story that may help you in your decision if you're considering working with a coach or consultant or an expert in any field for that matter.
An elderly sage presented a prince with a set of three small dolls. The prince was confused.
He said "What am I a girl that you give me dolls?"?
"This is a gift for a future king," the sage said. "You’ll understand in a minute why I’m giving these to you.”
“Fair enough,” the prince said. “Go on.”
The sage continued, “Look carefully at these dolls.? You’ll see a hole in the ear of each one."
The sage handed him a piece of string. "Pass it through each doll,” he said.
Intrigued, the prince picked up the first doll and put the string in one ear and it came out? the other ear.?
"This is one type of person," said the sage. “Whatever you tell him goes in one ear and out the other. He doesn't retain anything."
Then the prince put the string into the ear of the second doll. It emerged from its mouth.?
"This is the second type of person," said the sage. “Whatever you tell him, he tells everybody else."

The prince picked up the third doll. He put the string in one ear and it did not emerge anywhere else from the doll.?
"This is the third type of person," the sage said. “Whatever you tell him in secret stays inside and is never uttered to anyone else.”
"All right,” said the prince. “So what are you trying to tell me?? What is the best type of person I should have by my side as a consultant?"
The sage said nothing and handed him a fourth doll.?
When the prince put the string into the fourth doll, it came out through the other ear.
?
"Do it again,” said the sage.
The prince did as he was told. This time the string emerged out of its mouth. When he put the string in a third time, it did not come out at all.
"This is the best type of person, the one you need by your side" said the sage. "The trusted advisor who is wise, experienced, patient and smart. They are a person who knows when to listen and remain silent, they know when it's not the right time to give advice, But they know when to listen and give you the advice you need as well as when to speak out.”
Be careful where you take counsel, listen to the elderly sages advice. Find only those who are trustworthy, wise, experienced, patient and smart. They will serve you well.
Seek those who have a proven results process, a system to get you the results you desire with a process in place to take you through the steps of establishing your position, systematizing your process and leveraging your network to expand your growth.

3 年That's one of the things I been working on over the years. Being a better listener.
Ryan Zillion - loved the story! I don't think there's anyone out there that doesn't benefit from working with the right coaches. In fact, the most successful people that we hear about - business tycoons, celebrities, athletes etc. all work with coaches/mentors and often more than one, to advise with different avenues of their life.

3 年Great story, very easy to remember for sure. I think it is important to not just be a yes man when it comes to being an effective coach/consultant/advisor. You need to feel free to share your thoughts and perspectives in order to serve in the best way possible.
