WHAT VALUE DO RECRUITERS OFFER JOB SEEKERS?

Companies and recruiters are looking for “A-Game players”, the top 5%. We receive thousands of CVs each day and if you do not stand out, you will be lost in the noise.

It is a competition, and it is the most important competition you will ever enter. Getting the right job will change your life. Therefore, it is important that you prepare and put in the effort to win.

If you do not stand out, you will be lost in the noise

When it is time to change your job, for whatever reason (first job, new career direction, redundancy or upward career development), there is a wealth of and expertise available within the recruitment industry for work seekers. The recruitment industry provides candidates access to available positions, advice and process control. Furthermore they offer management that few individuals could dream of dealing with for themselves.

The temporary market provides job seekers with opportunities that suit the employers’ needs at any specific time. The placement of temporary staff allows employers to cover human resource shortfalls, impart expertise in a skill-short market, and gear up or down for specific projects. The temporary sector also aids disadvantaged candidates in entering the labour market.

In the recruitment industry recruiters have the opportunity to affect the careers, and therefore, the lives of individuals, in a positive way. It is not uncommon to receive thank you notes or even gifts from grateful candidates. As a quality recruiter, you will gain unique access to your client base, which often provides you with clear insight into corporate or public sector culture and even business methodologies. This can be a rewarding aspect for people interested in organisational development.

Should I ever bypass the recruiter? I highly recommend you do not try to bypass the recruiter. Some companies deal with recruiters in order to not deal directly with the candidate. Dealing directly with employing company could expel you

from the process. Like anything, your action has direct repercussions. The risks of bypassing the recruiter far outweigh any benefit of saving a few dollars for a company that would consider backstabbing the recruiting agency.

Many job seekers have the mind-set that recruiting agencies treat job seekers like cattle and are only in it for the fee. The truth is, they are in it for the fee, and because of this they will do their best and negotiate their hardest to fill a vacancy. Remember, it is what they do all day, every day.

A recruiter will blacklist you once they find out what you have done (and they will). Your name may already be on a long list of names that the recruiter has agreed with the client to target and speak with – by contacting the client directly you will be immediately “outed” as unprofessional.

The client may immediately disqualify you from the process due to ethics concerns. Can the client company trust you if you are willing to betray the trust of their recruiter?

If you are trying to find a new job, recruiters can be your best friends

Recruiters will help buffer the negotiations and help ensure you get a fair offer. The better the offer they get for you, the more they get paid. Once a client has activated a recruiter to find candidates, the company has approved the budget spend of the fees and are prepared to pay for the search. Getting a “free” candidate does not matter in this situation.

And is often the opposite of what they want. They are paying the recruiter to screen, select and present candidates. The company

does not want to hear from you directly after the recruiter has sifted and selected you for the interview. If you feel a recruiter keeps sending you inappropriate positions do not even take their calls; they care nothing about you or about a good fit.

If a recruiter describes a position you have already applied for, tell them you have already applied. You have an uphill battle ahead: the recruiter now has an interest in promoting his/her own candidates over you.

Do not cheat a recruiter by applying privately based on information the recruiter revealed. It is unethical. Recruiters are busy, working with many potential candidates and trying to fill multiple positions for several clients simultaneously. As such, they

might take some time to get back to you. While it is certainly appropriate to politely follow up with them if you have not heard back from the agency in a few days, multiple calls and emails per day is obnoxious.

With the unemployment rate so high in South Africa, are there actually jobs out there? If you are trying to find a new job, recruiters can be your best friends. They can match you with employers and roles that are perfect for your skills, interests and values. The best part about being listed with a recruiter is that all you need to do is to be your wonderful and talented self!
