What is Urban Air Mobility (UAM)?

The term UAM is often mistakenly used to describe things that are more accurately defined as AAM. The opposite mixup also takes place, even within professional circles, so let's have a closer look at what exactly UAM is and why it should not be mixed up with AAM (except for specific contexts).

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) encompasses intra-city traffic as well as peripheral (suburban) areas. Currently, these types of commutes rely predominantly on cars, motorcycles, and buses. All of these contribute to congestion, delays, and frustration for many commuters. And that is why the allure of Urban Air Mobility is so strong.

UAM promises efficient, affordable aerial transport to bypass all the aforementioned ground traffic. Ultimately UAM is also expected to be accessible with just a smartphone tap. And this very prospect has sparked a global surge in the development of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, with new models and announcements appearing regularly.

The idea of flying over traffic congestion in a swift, environmentally-friendly vehicle is compelling and one of the ideas that drives the sector forward. Its applications range from airport shuttles and medical transport to commuter and personal (taxi-style) services, as well as cargo and delivery operations. It also holds particular appeal for cities divided by rivers, mountains, or spread over islands.

The potential benefits of UAM extend beyond passenger transport to include logistics, encompassing both hub-to-hub and first and last-mile deliveries. The aim to expedite shipments, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact has sparked interest in using fully automated platforms to link distribution centers directly with consumers, presenting an enticing vision of UAM that continues to attract significant investment.
