What unites India?

Can language be a unified force in a nation with multi culture and multi traditions and values?

In a diverse tapestry of languages and cultures, Hindi language stands as a thread that weaves the fabric of India into a harmonious blend. As the most widely spoken language , Hindi plays a pivotal role in uniting the nation, transcending regional boundaries and fostering a sense of unity among its people.

Linguistic Diversity:

India, with its 29 states and 7 union territories, boasts a linguistic landscape as rich and varied as its geographical terrain. Hundreds of languages are spoken across the nation, each with its unique script, sounds, and cultural nuances. Amidst this linguistic kaleidoscope, Hindi emerges as a bridge, connecting people from different linguistic backgrounds, though, an Indian from North speaks a different slang of Hindi while an Indian from south speaks a different slang as also from east and west.

National Language:

While India doesn't have a declared national language, Hindi enjoys the status of the official language of the Indian government. This recognition has helped Hindi become a common medium of communication in administrative and official spheres, fostering a sense of cohesion and facilitating efficient governance.

Cultural Integration:

Hindi, as a language, transcends mere communication; it carries the essence of India's rich cultural heritage. Bollywood, one of the largest film industries in the world, predominantly uses Hindi, making it a cultural ambassador that reaches every corner of the nation. The shared experience of watching Hindi films, enjoying its music, and engaging with its vibrant narratives creates a cultural unity that surpasses regional differences.

On a lighter note, Bollywood also gave us a different slang of how Hindi can be spoken- the films changed the way Hindi is spoken- Mujhe becomes Mereko and Apunko- Mujeh Chahiye (I want) becomes apunko Mangthai- a typical bambaiiya slang.

As I write this note one of my neighbours called me just now and asked if I want breakfast in a typical Hyderabad Hindi (Kya thereko breakfast hona? - do you need breakfast? Hyderabad mein sabkuch chaltha.

Educational Connect:

The prominence of Hindi in the education system further solidifies its role as a unifying force. It is taught in schools across the country, providing a common linguistic foundation for students. This linguistic uniformity fosters a sense of national identity and facilitates smoother interactions among individuals from different states and regions.

Social Cohesion:

In everyday life, Hindi serves as a language of communication among people who speak different mother tongues. Whether it's a business transaction, a casual conversation, or a shared celebration, Hindi often becomes the medium through which diverse communities come together, breaking down linguistic barriers and promoting social cohesion.

Challenges and Opportunities:

While Hindi plays a crucial unifying role, it is essential to address concerns related to language diversity. Recognizing and respecting the multitude of languages in India is vital for maintaining cultural richness. Efforts to promote multilingualism and preserve regional languages can coexist with the unifying force of Hindi, creating a harmonious linguistic ecosystem.

Sometimes the way the language is used also confuses and distorts the meaning

For a long time, I did not know why Duronto express of the Indian railways was called so and then I realised that when Mamta Bannerjee was the former Railway minister under the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government (1999-2000) she wanted to introduce a train that is very fast and bypasses many stops- It need to be immediate- Thuranth in Hindi and when most people from the east pronounce it as Doronth- most of the words which starts with the phonetics U changes to O…. and so on..and thus Duronto Express was given birth to…which has limited stops and is faster too as compared to other trains.

In conclusion, Hindi serves as a linguistic glue that binds the diverse fabric of India. Its ability to transcend regional boundaries, foster cultural integration, and facilitate communication makes it a powerful unifying force. Embracing linguistic diversity while cherishing the role of Hindi is key to nurturing a strong and united India.

Aur India mein sabkuch chaltha… Happy World Hindi Day.
