What Is UGC and How We Can Use It In Influencer Marketing? - Saulderson Newsletter - 10th November

WHAT IS UGC?

UGC stands for User Generated Content, which is brand-focused content created by consumers that is shared on social media. There is no limit to the format of UGC - it can be stories, short videos, long videos, photos and more. If a consumer created and published the video, then it’s UGC.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

UGC is one of the key pillars of viral marketing. Virality used to be one video blowing up, but now, due to platforms such as TikTok and Reddit, consumers can add their own opinions. Through that, topics become viral rather than the content itself. This means, that when you have a product that you want to go viral, the more UGC you have, the higher chance you have of becoming viral.

UGC also creates a bank of consumer thoughts and opinions. Through observing UGC we can easily build a sentiment analysis to see how consumers feel and interact with the product. Some great examples of UGC are games such as Call of Duty. Content creators create their entire personas and brands around playing the game. This drives viewers to share their opinions, creating discussions and community, which in turn broadcasts the game to a wider audience and drives more sales.

Games like Call of Duty have UGC at a mass scale, however, that doesn’t stop competitors from making a name for themselves as well.

Looking at the game Valorant we can observe how a brand-new game, can become a viral sensation. At first, the game creators gave specific codes to influencers to broadcast the game on Twitch. This generated some interest in the game. Following this, only viewers of the streams could apply for a game code, which incentivised users to watch these streams and learn more about the game. Additionally, through streaming the game, Valorant provided extra paid incentives, similar to an affiliate program. At first, the game had influencers streaming, then smaller creators streaming and then average users streaming Valorant - bringing millions of eyes to the game. This was all before the game became public. After a few months, the game became public and allowed anyone to stream and play the game, which created a second wave and a higher influx of customers.?

INFLUENCERS AND UGC

Influencers are the key to successful UGC. They act as key opinion leaders that can lead a community in a specific direction. Through CTAs and incentives, consumers are converted through their para-social relationship with the influencer. Once consumers start posting content this increases authenticity and word-of-mouth which helps push other consumers through their purchase journey.

UGC isn’t limited to games. We often see UGC in makeup and beauty, where consumers review and discuss their favourite products. UGC is a scalable and interchangeable tool that marketers can take advantage of and use across any sector.
