There are various types of homes you will need to consider before making a purchase, and your decision generally depends on your family situation. You may need a single-family (attached or detached), duplex, half plex, condo, townhome, or manufactured home. Each option has its pros and cons, depending on your homeownership goals, so you need to decide which type of property will help you reach those goals.

Once you decide on that, consider the following about the home:

  • Age/year built
  • Number of bedrooms
  • Number of baths
  • Number of stories or levels
  • Orientation (direction home faces)
  • Utilities
  • HVAC: Central heating and air conditioning, propane, gravity, floor, or wall
  • Parking/garage
  • RV parking or boat storage
