What is truth?
Two items overlapped this week and set me thinking.
One was the question Pontius Pilate asked Jesus: “What is truth?”
The other was the news that Trump now believes that an audit of the 2020 election will overthrow the result, and reinstate him as president in August. Even though the election pathway is defined by the Constitution, which makes no provision for such a process.
Trump is interesting, because he seems to decide what he wants the truth to be, and that becomes his truth. He then seems to surround himself with yes-men who reinforce his delusions by agreeing with him. And he sacks people who don’t agree.
But Pilate’s question “What is truth?” is vital. We must counter-balance what we want against reality. Whilst we need to pursue our dreams, we must also ensure that those dreams are realistic.
So how does this fit into a financial blog?
We have to make sure we’re not deluding ourselves with our business plans and ideas.
I’ve worked with any number of businesses where the failed projects are often the directors’ pet projects. They got pushed through because the directors wanted them to be successful – despite the evidence to the contrary.
I’ve seen business plans that are pie in the sky. (Actually, I’ve made business plans that had little basis in reality…)
So how do we reality check our business plans? How do we surround ourselves with good people who’ll challenge us? And how do we make sure we listen to them?

3 年I also think there's a grey area - sometimes (often?) we knowingly delude ourselves - for example, we're thinking of moving flats, and I have totally deluded myself into believing that the place we like is bigger than it is! Anyway, I imagine this is truth with financial health as well.
