What trumps where people work when it comes to employees’ experience?

What trumps where people work when it comes to employees’ experience?

#4 Having better performance conversations series

If I were to ask you what creates a more compelling experience for an employee than where they work, what would you come up with??

How connected they are to your purpose? Yep, that seems fair.

How much do they enjoy their role? Yeah, I would pick that.?

They are valid but don’t get as much of an uptick as what Clifton and Harter’s found when they researched their book; Culture Shock. They found that there is a more compelling reason for being engaged in their job and workplace – outside of where and when we work.?

80% of people globally say that when they receive ‘meaningful feedback’ on a weekly basis it lifts their sense of engagement by 80%. Now that’s staggering!! 80%!?

Then ask what is meaningful feedback? What counts? This is what they say:

  1. Recognition or appreciation for work done recently. That’s not something last year or even last quarter. It’s about seeing it and saying it, in the moment or close to it.

  1. Helping them manage interpersonal conflict. Now this is a biggie. One of the most challenging and stressful components of work is how we connect with others. Your people need support and help in this space. If you don’t know how to help them – then find someone who does. It’s important. And venting doesn’t count.

  1. Current goals and priorities. That is, task. So yes task matters. But it’s not the whole conversation. People want help with their role and you need to be available to give it.?

The one thing I would add is making sure we discuss their development (career and on the job). This comes up as something that is consistently missing from the manager and employee relationship. Both can drive this too by the way.?

And let’s make sure we don’t save all this up for just the formal performance reviews. That then takes away the impact. These are ongoing meaningful conversations and feedback.
