What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the term for a condition which causes someone to hear noise in the ear, such as a ringing sound, that comes from inside the body rather than from an external source.

The condition is caused by a change in the ear, including damage from exposure to harmful noise or an ear infection.

Tinnitus can be a temporary problem, or a more serious issue often associated with hearing loss.

?

Persistent tinnitus

? Approximately 1 in 7 adults in the UK live with persistent tinnitus*

? Incurable condition

? Extremely distressing over time and causes sleep deprivation

?

Temporary tinnitus

? Relatively common

? Often experienced after a loud concert or similar, then recovered a day later

?

Temporary tinnitus, though quite common and recoverable, is a warning that repeated exposure of this kind could lead to permanent damage.

Tinnitus caused by harmful noise can be prevented. Controlling workplace noise exposure effectively and providing appropriate hearing protection prevents damage which can lead to tinnitus.
