What The Third Floor looks for in Modeling reels:

You love assets; we love assets! The Third Floor is a previs studio at the forefront of the movie making process. Because we do previsualization our assets need to be low poly for fast renders, not finals topology. Low poly, low poly, low poly!!! However just because they're low poly, doesn't mean they aren't appealing! Think something along the lines of video games! Low poly count but with beautiful textures that make the asset look spectacular!

As far as what type of assets to include in your reel, it's best to have a variety of assets in your demo reel. We love generalists; so that means we want to see characters, props, and full environment examples.

The Third Floor is looking for realistic humans, not cartoon characters. We want to see them fully textured and we want to see your wireframe topology. We're looking to see how well you put an asset together and we want to see the structure of your model. If your human character looks off or the proportions are wrong, we're going to notice!! Do your research, take a class (or two), get feedback on your models, refine, repeat, refine, repeat, and then when they're totally awesome put them on your demo reel. Most of the projects we work on are going to be live-action and our previs asset need to be representative of real humans! Take a look at our demo reels if you're still not sure.

We also want to see hard surface examples such as cars, buildings, and props that are fully textured with, you guessed it, wireframe topology provided. Once again we want to see those assets in low poly. If you can model a beautiful Lamborghini but it has a million tris the whole room groans in pain while we watch your demo reel. We want to see efficient topology that wont slow down the whole process. We work in quick refresh rates and that means a low and efficient poly count. Show us that you're thinking about our process, what it's going to take to make something look amazing but not kill the processing speed while doing it.

We want to see your amazing environment work! And what I mean by environments are full scenes. Not just a building spinning turntable style, but an actual environment that you take us through. Also on a side note, we don't want to see a Zbrush painting like a relief carving. That doesn't tell us anything about how you work to create an immersive environment that the audience can get lost in! Once again we want to see those wireframes so we can review your topology. And of course think low poly count with beautifully flushed out textures and lighting!

Models started in Maya first are most desired, not started and sculpted in Zbrush. We want to see that you know excellent topology and we love to see stellar realistic textures! Also show us you know how to light your assets!

And a big one: 1 concise location that we can see your examples such as a single demo reel or an artstation page. Please don't make us hunt around to find your work or have to open 10 different videos to see what you've been doing. Spend some time, plan, and then pull together a concise thought out demo reel for us to review!

We’re in the business of Previz and we want to see assets that are realistic in nature (not cartoony) as most of the projects we work on are realistic. If you’re still not clear on what we do or what we’re looking for, please take a look at our most recent work !

Oh, and one more thing. Please provide a reel breakdown of exactly what you modeled in each shot!!! It's even better if you bake it into your reel so we don't have to look at a separate sheet while trying to watch your reel!!

Now that you've completed all of that be sure to apply!

Thank you so much
