What will be the Tesla of Clinical Research?

What will be the Tesla of Clinical Research?

I believe we’re living in the most extraordinary time ever and the future is coming faster than most of us realize. The pandemic has advanced the use of digital technology at least 3 to 5 years into the future and forced us to work together with unprecedented speed, paving the way for a democratized, connected and data-driven future of clinical research, empowering the patient and the emergence of the Decentralized Clinical Trials (DCT) model.

We’ve seen an explosion of tech-driven gains and innovations that have the potential to reshape many aspects of health and medicine. All around us are technologies from artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), blockchain, synthetic biology and global fast connectivity to personal genomics and robotics, to name a few. All these, individually and in convergence, will re-shape the future of clinical trials.

In order to stay in the game and be relevant, we need to be bold and exponential in our thinking, the status quo linear moves won’t cut it and yes, “organization optimized for the 20th century will fail in the 21st century”. Kodak and Nokia missed the opportunity and went bankrupt because they didn’t seize the moment.

We need to stay laser focused to execute and achieve our goals as well as continue to monitor the outside world and not get complacent. It is crucial to pave the path to lead, win the digital revolution, remain on the lookout for new business models and emerging technologies by leveraging the convergence of the different technologies to create the digital execution model of clinical trials.??Value is recognized by creating efficiencies that will remove burden on patients, clinical study-sites and study teams while accelerating timelines to bring drugs to market for patients in need.

?The paradigm shift will require a different mindset, one which will bring about significant improvements over what currently exists. This will allow us to challenge the status quo and rethink the R&D business model and create the next Tesla for our industry. Tesla created a computer on wheels rather than just another vehicle that can operate on batteries. Will you create a revolutionary self-autonomous clinical trial, rather than just another digital trial?

?Discover the next generation of clinical trial execution model, which relies on the convergence of new technologies, and business model. Blockchain, 3D, Sensors, precision medicine, and artificial intelligence to name a few, to empower individuals to gain control of their own health data and to provide principal investigators and clinicians with real-world data to predict and change health outcomes. We aspire for an integrated end-to-end platform, inclusive of recruitment, engagement, ongoing data collection, and the predictive models to reduce the research cycle time and lower the cost of bringing medicine to market.

Great questions raised, Munther. We have to deliver on the current adoption of approaches like #decentralizedtrials But we should not get complacent believing the things we are implementing today are “the future”. I don’t know what the future holds. But I do know that if we do not maintain our willingness to adopt, our receptivity to innovation, our commitment to experimentation — we won’t get there. The willingness to adopt may be the most important “innovation during Covid” for us to maintain to reach the future that patients deserve.
